Fujian Medical University was founded in 1937, formerly known as Fujian Provincial Medical College. Hou Zonglian (1900-1992), the first president, was a famous physiologist and medical educator in modern China. In the course of nearly 80 years, the school has always taken cultivating excellent talents, promoting scientific and technological progress, serving social development, and carrying forward advanced culture as its own responsibility. It has gradually formed the excellent motto of "diligence, preciseness, realism, and innovation". It has become a medical school with coordinated development of science, management, law, arts, engineering and other disciplines. The school has two campuses, Shangjie and Taijiang, covering an area of about 1500 mu, with a building area of more than 420000 square meters. The main body of the school is located in Shangjie campus of Fuzhou University New Area. There are 20 colleges (departments), with more than 21000 students and 10700 teaching and medical staff (including affiliated hospitals), including more than 1200 people in the school headquarters. There are five directly affiliated hospitals, of which the Third Affiliated Hospital is under construction. Adhering to the concept of open education, we have carried out multi-level and multi angle cooperation with nearly 20 universities and scientific research institutes at home and abroad.

The overall goal of the school is to cultivate high-quality talents with scientific spirit, humanistic quality and professional quality, with all-round development of morality, intelligence, sports and beauty, rich sense of social responsibility, and able to meet the needs of economic and social development. In the past 80 years, more than 100000 medical talents have been trained and transported for the state and local governments. Among the alumni, there are many outstanding talents, including academicians, experts and professors. Many alumni have become leaders in the medical and health front. The students cultivated in our school are famous for their solid theoretical foundation and strong practical ability, which are widely welcomed by employers. In recent years, the employment rate has remained above 96%. The passing rate of clinical medicine, Stomatology, preventive medicine, nursing and other professional students in the national licensed doctor (nurse) qualification examination over the years ranked among the top in the province. For many years, clinical medical students have been among the best in the National Medical College Students' clinical skills competition. In May 2016, our team won the first prize in the Seventh National Medical College Students' clinical skills competition.

At present, there are more than 12900 full-time undergraduates, 260 doctoral students, 2700 master students, more than 500 international students, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students, and more than 4900 adult education students. There are 26 general undergraduate majors.
