Southwest University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of education and jointly built by the Ministry of education, the Ministry of agriculture and Chongqing. The school dates back to the East Sichuan normal school established in 1906. After several generations of inheritance and evolution, it was renamed Sichuan Provincial Institute of education in 1936. In 1950, the departments of education, Chinese, foreign languages, history, geography and mathematics of Sichuan Provincial Institute of education merged with the National Women's normal college established in 1940 to establish Southwest Normal College; the departments of Agronomy, horticulture and agricultural products manufacturing merged with the private Xianghui college established in 1946 to establish Southwest Agricultural college. In 1985, the two universities were renamed Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University respectively. In 2000, Chongqing Light Industry Vocational University was merged into southwest Normal University; in 2001, Southwest Agricultural University, Sichuan Animal Husbandry and veterinary college, and Citrus Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences were merged to form a new Southwest Agricultural University. In 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University merged to form Southwest University, opening a new chapter in the development of the University.
