Harbin Institute of petroleum was founded in 2003, which was named Huarui College of Daqing Institute of petroleum. In 2012, it was set up independently and renamed Harbin Institute of petroleum with the approval of the Ministry of education. It is a private undergraduate college with the right to grant bachelor's degree.

The university has 10 secondary colleges and 3 public teaching and research departments, including petroleum engineering college, chemical engineering college, mechanical engineering college, civil engineering college, information engineering college, automatic control engineering college, economic management college, foreign language college, art college and international education college. There are 28 undergraduate majors, covering five disciplines of engineering, economics, liberal arts, management and arts, with 9000 undergraduates and international students. A school running pattern of cultivating applied technical talents at undergraduate level with engineering as the main subject and coordinated development of multiple disciplines has initially formed.
