Fuzhou University is a key construction University of the national "211 Project". Fujian Provincial People's government and the Ministry of Education jointly build the University. Founded in 1958, it has developed into a key university with engineering as the main body, combining science and engineering, and coordinated development of science, engineering, economics, management, arts, law, art and other disciplines.

The school has many campuses, such as Qishan, Yishan, Tongpan in Fuzhou, Jimei and Gulangyu in Xiamen, Quangang and Jinjiang in Quanzhou, covering an area of more than 7000 mu. The main body of the school is located in Qishan campus of Fuzhou University New Area, with a total area of more than 1.23 million square meters of public housing and more than 140000 square meters of sports venues. The total value of fixed assets is more than 3.3 billion yuan, of which the value of teaching and scientific research equipment is more than 1 billion yuan. The library has a collection of more than 3.22 million books and 2.27 million e-books. The network center computer room is the main node of China Education and research computer network in Fuzhou.

The university has 19 full-time undergraduate and postgraduate training colleges and an independent college. At present, there are 1 national key discipline, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 5 provincial advantageous discipline innovation platforms, 6 provincial characteristic key disciplines and 26 provincial key disciplines; chemistry, engineering and materials science have entered the top 1% of international ESI disciplines. There are 11 postdoctoral mobile stations, 10 first-class discipline doctoral programs, 3 second-class discipline doctoral programs (excluding first-class discipline coverage), 36 first-class discipline master programs, 7 second-class discipline master programs (excluding first-class discipline coverage), 12 professional degree authorization programs (including 23 engineering fields) and 78 undergraduate programs.
