Nanjing Institute of physical education was founded in August 1956. It is located in the capital of ten dynasties. It is located in the former site of the central stadium of the Republic of China in Zhongshan Mausoleum scenic spot in the eastern suburb of Nanjing. It inherits the context of modern Chinese sports. The college covers an area of more than 640 mu, with a building area of 137000 square meters, an outdoor playground area of 59900 square meters, 185000 books and materials, and 73 million yuan of teaching, training and scientific research equipment.

At present, the college has three undergraduate departments (Physical Education Department, sports department and sports human science department), one secondary college (vocational and Technical College), three departments (Postgraduate Department [preparatory], continuing education department and Affiliated School Department), a total of seven teaching units; undergraduate education has six majors, including physical education, sports training, social sports, national traditional sports, sports human science and journalism, with graduate students There are three full-time Master's degree authorization points and one professional sports master's degree authorization point. The college has 1815 full-time undergraduates, 100 full-time postgraduates, 76 students of sports master's degree, 366 full-time higher vocational students and 639 students of adult education.

The college has the largest professional sports training base in the province, including 12 provincial professional sports teams, 528 professional athletes and 129 full-time coaches.

There are 185 full-time teachers in higher education, including 58 senior professional and technical teachers and 127 intermediate and below teachers. Among the full-time teachers, those with master's degree or above account for 43.8% of the total number of teachers. Over the past half century, the college has trained a large number of sports professionals for the country and Jiangsu Province.
