Southwest Petroleum University

Southwest Petroleum University is the second petroleum undergraduate university founded in New China. It is a University jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by Sichuan Provincial People's government.

In the middle and late 1950s, China's petroleum industry was quite backward, far from meeting the needs of national construction, which aroused great concern of the party and the state. Chairman Mao Zedong personally visited Longchang gas field in Sichuan, and general secretary Deng Xiaoping personally presided over the exploration and development of Sichuan oil and gas fields. In March 1958, three exploration wells located in Dongguan, Guang'an wusheng and Suining Daying of Nanchong produced high-yield oil flow, which shocked the whole country. General Yu Qiuli, Minister of the Ministry of petroleum industry, took charge of Nanchong and started the central Sichuan oil conference. In order to speed up the development of Sichuan's oil and gas resources and train technical cadres for the development of the oil and gas industry in the southwest cooperation zone, the state has decided to set up the second petroleum university, which is located in Nanchong, an important town in northern Sichuan, where the central Sichuan Petroleum battle headquarters is located.

In August 1958, the Ministry of petroleum industry recruited 643 first-time students in Chengdu, and then appointed Ma Zai, director of the Department of infrastructure, to lead a group of young experts and cadres to Nanchong to plan the establishment of the college. On September 20, the Ministry of petroleum industry and the Ministry of Education formally approved the establishment of Sichuan Petroleum Institute with the approval of the State Council. Since then, with the construction and development of China's oil and gas industry, the school has started to break the conventional practice of running a school with students first and then building a school.

In July 1970, the school was renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute with the approval of the State Council. In March 2000, the school was transferred to Sichuan Province, jointly built by the central and local governments, and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's government. Approved by the Ministry of education in 2003, the University was upgraded to a university, and officially renamed Southwest Petroleum University in December 2005. On November 1, 2008, CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC and Sichuan Provincial People's government signed an agreement to jointly build southwest petroleum university.

The University began to recruit master's degree students in 1978 and obtained the right to confer doctor's degree in 1986. In 1988, oil and gas field development engineering (combined Petroleum Mechanical Engineering) became one of the first batch of national key disciplines. In 1989, the State Key Laboratory of oil and gas reservoir geology and development engineering approved the construction. In 1991, the University established a post doctoral research station.

After more than 50 years of construction, the university has developed into an engineering oriented university with multi-disciplinary coordinated development, outstanding advantages and distinctive characteristics of oil and gas, and the major of petroleum is at the leading level in China.

The university has 16 teaching colleges, 1 new energy and unconventional oil and Gas Research Institute, and 1 Engineering Training Center. The disciplines cover eight disciplines, including science, engineering, management, economics, literature, law, education and art. There are 52 undergraduate enrollment majors, eight national characteristic specialty construction sites, 16 Sichuan characteristic specialties, one national undergraduate cultural quality education base and 11 Sichuan undergraduate talent training bases. There are 4 first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 24 second-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 18 first-class discipline master's degree authorization points, 86 second-class discipline master's degree authorization points, and 6 Master's degree categories (including 16 engineering master's authorization fields, 1 MBA authorization field, 1 translation master's authorization field, 1 Engineering Management Master's authorization field, and 1 law Master's authorization field) In addition, eight university teachers are studying in-service for master's degree. There are four mobile stations for postdoctoral research, one first-class national key discipline, three second-class national key disciplines and 15 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. There are 2 national teaching teams, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 National virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 2 innovation (cultivation) teams of "innovation team development plan" of the Ministry of education, 7 provincial teaching teams, and 3 provincial scientific research and innovation teams. The first-class discipline of petroleum and natural gas engineering ranks second in China in the third round of national discipline evaluation, and the post doctoral research mobile station of petroleum and natural gas engineering was named "national excellent post doctoral research mobile station" in 2005. At present, there are 30661 full-time students, including 22422 ordinary undergraduates, 3686 postgraduates, 695 doctoral students and 11 foreign students. In addition, there are 1561 in-service engineering postgraduates.

The school has 2280 teaching staff, including 222 senior professional and technical personnel and 524 deputy senior professional and technical personnel. It has successively undertaken 20 projects above the provincial and ministerial level, including National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, science fund for outstanding young scholars, natural science fund, national "973", "863", science and technology tackling (support) plan, major science and technology projects, National Social Science Fund, key projects of the Ministry of education, New Century Excellent Talents plan, Doctoral Program Fund of the Ministry of education, Sichuan outstanding young academic and technological leaders fund 26 awards, and more than 360 provincial and ministerial level awards, including the national special award for scientific and technological progress, the first prize for national scientific and technological progress, and the second prize for national scientific and technological progress invention. The university has a National University Science Park. The science and technology park is the National College Students' science and technology entrepreneurship practice base, Sichuan postdoctoral innovation practice base, Chengdu College Students' Entrepreneurship demonstration base, and Chengdu small and medium-sized enterprise incubation base. Relying on the advantages of science and technology resources of the University and the resources of the western region, the science and technology park will gradually be built into the first university science and Technology Park in the western region with the characteristics of oil and gas, which focuses on the R & D of oil exploration and development technology, the incubation of petroleum equipment and petrochemical core technology products, and integrates new energy, new materials, electronic information technology and office services.

In the teaching achievement awards, the school has won 87 teaching achievement awards at provincial and ministerial level and above, including 8 National Teaching Achievement Awards (including 2 first prizes, 5 second prizes and 1 excellent prize). There are 1 National Excellent Course and 36 provincial excellent courses. 27 national planning textbooks and 14 undergraduate planning textbooks of Sichuan Province during the 12th Five Year Plan period were compiled, and 45 textbooks won the national, provincial and ministerial excellent textbook awards.

The university has two campuses in Chengdu and Nanchong, with a total area of more than 3000 mu; 27000 sets of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment, with a total value of 410 million yuan; 1.8936 million paper books and 43200 GB digital resources (including e-books). There are two special bases for field geological practice in Emei, Sichuan and Beibei, Chongqing, a high-tech industrial base and student practice base covering an area of nearly 100 mu in Nanchong, Sichuan, and a science and technology exchange center in Chengdu.

The University attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation, and has established close exchanges and cooperation with universities and relevant academic research institutions in more than 10 countries and regions such as the United States, Russia, Britain, Germany, Japan, France and Canada.

The university has a glorious tradition of attaching great importance to Party building and ideological and political work, and has been repeatedly rated as the advanced grassroots party organization and the advanced collective of Party building and ideological and political work in Sichuan Province, and the advanced unit of "four good" activities carried out by the leading group of Colleges and universities in Sichuan Province.
