Perennial herbs. The roots are thick, straight and deep. Stem erect, up to 70 cm, round, with longitudinal furrows, densely covered with yellow hairs, nodes obvious. Leaves opposite; ovate or ovate lanceolate, apex acuminate, leaf base narrow, entire, both sides hairy; no petiole, or lower leaves with short petiole. Flowers 1-3 or more, sparsely distributed on the stem end, forming cymes; calyx long rod-shaped, with 10 veins, scattered growth of pubescence, apex 5-lobed, edge membranous, light purple; petals 5, edge irregular, deep lobed, dark red, also white varieties; stamens 10; ovary cylindrical, petiole, style 5. Capsule long rod-shaped, upper part expanded, calyx persistent. The flowering period is from July to August.
It grows in mountain forest and grassland or cultivated in garden. It is distributed in the north and middle of China.
