[plant morphology] Ranunculus Japonicus
Perennial herbs. The fibrous roots are mostly white. Stem erect, 0.3-1 m high, branched cylindrical, hollow. The stems and petioles were densely covered with spreading yellowish brown hairs. Basal leaves clustered, with long stalks, usually 2-3-lobed, 1-lobed broadly cuneate, 3-5 cm long and 0.8-1.5 cm wide, then deeply lobed, 2-lobed oblong oblanceolate, with irregular teeth or 3-lobes at the upper end; cauline leaves are similar to basal leaves, but petioles are shorter. The flowers are small, about 6-8 mm in diameter, and the opposite leaves are solitary at the end of branches; sepals 5, narrowly ovate, reflexive, with long hairs outside; petals 5, yellow, broadly obovate, about 5.5 mm long, 3 mm wide, with small round scales at the base; stamens many, short; carpels separated, with one ovule. Aggregate achene globose, ca. 1 cm in diam., receptacle elongate, with short hairs; achene flat, narrowly obovate, ca. 4 mm long. There are indistinct ridges near the two sides and short beaks at the top. The flowering period is from April to May.
It grows in wet and shady places such as ditches or paddy fields. It is distributed in the middle, lower reaches and south of the Yangtze River.
[collection] at the end of spring and the beginning of summer, the whole grass was washed and dried.
[medicinal materials] the dried whole grass is about 40 cm long and dark brown. The stem is branched, slender and flattened, with longitudinal wrinkles, covered with grayish yellow coarse hairs, and the stem base has fibrous roots. The leaves are shrunk, the leaves are 2-fold and 3-split, and the base of petiole is sheath like. The upper part of the branch has flowers or fruits, but most of them have fallen off, and the receptacle 3-4 mm long is exposed. The air is weak and the taste is light. It is better to be dry without sediment.
[chemical constituents] the content of protoanemone in the whole plant is about 0.12% in fresh stems and leaves, 0.34% in dry stems and leaves, and 0.3% in fresh roots. The whole grass contains flavonoid glycosides, phenols, amino acids and organic acids.
