Deciduous shrub, 50-120 cm high. Branches, petioles and inflorescences are spiny; new branches are red purple, densely covered with white villi; old branches are purple brown, covered with villi. The terminal leaflet is the largest, rhombic, or 2-3-lobed, with 5-9 (~ 11) leaflets, broad ovate or rhombic lanceolate, 2-5 cm in length and 1-3 cm in width. The apex is short pointed or acuminate, the base is round or broadly cuneate, the edge is double serrated or coarsely serrated, the lower part is white green, densely covered with fine villi; the petiole is about 1-3 cm long; stipules are red purple, lanceolate, villous. Cymes terminal or axillary, flowers small, ca. 6 mm in diameter; sepals 5, lanceolate or ovate, triforme; petals 5, peach red, obovate, base with short claws; stamens numerous, separate; carpels numerous. Aggregate fruit oblate, about 1 cm in diameter, red, purple black when mature, densely tomentose. It blooms in summer.
It grows on hillside and thicket. It is distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Tibet.
The fruit of this plant is used as raspberry in Yunnan.
