Herbs annual, ca. 1 m tall. The stem is erect and solitary, with oblique branches and white juice flowing out after breaking. The tender stem is hollow and green. The leaves in the middle and lower parts are 4-10 cm in length and 2.5-5 cm in width, and are divided or undivided in harp shape; the petiole is 2-3 cm in length; one or all of the leaves in the lower part of the inflorescence are purplish red. The inflorescence is cup-shaped, arranged in dense corymbose shape at the top of stem or branch; involucre is green bell shaped, with 5-lobed tip; gland 1-2, cup-shaped, without petal like appendage; ovary ovate, 3-loculed, style 3, free, with 2-lobed tip. Capsule ovate triangular, ca. 5 mm in diam. The seeds are ovate with verrucous processes on the surface.

It is cultivated all over the country.
