Deciduous shrubs or small trees, up to 15 m in height. Branches spreading, glabrous; bark brownish gray, longitudinally lobed, single leaf alternate, ovoid, 6-15 cm long, 4-10 cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base truncate or subcordate, margin serrate, sometimes 3-5-lobed, both sides short hairy; stipules caducous. Spikes in axils of new branches, unisexual, dioecious; male perianth and stamens are 4, sterile pistil gyriform; female stigma 2-lobed, as long as style, persistent. The fruit is dark purple at maturity.
On limestone overhanging rocks or hillsides. Distribution in Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Anhui, Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Taiwan and other places.
