[plant morphology] Rumex
Herbs perennial, up to 1 m tall. The root is thick and yellow. Stems erect, usually unbranched, glabrous, or slightly hairy, grooved, hollow. Single leaf alternate; leaf ovate oblong, 5-15 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, apex obtuse or pointed, base sagittate or subhalberd shaped, entire, sometimes slightly undulate; stem: part of leaf narrow, lanceolate, sessile and clasping; basal leaf long petiole; Stipule sheath, oblique, later ruptured. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; inflorescence terminal, narrow panicle, sparse branches, flowers in clusters; male flowers 6, elliptic, arranged in 2 rings, inner ring perianth piece about 3 mm long, outer ring slightly narrow, stamen 6, filaments very short; female flowers outer ring perianth reflexed downward close to pedicel, inner ring perianth erect, after flowering increased, enveloping fruit, diameter about 5 mm, round, entire, each with one not obvious Ovary triangular, stigma brush like, purplish red. It grows on roadsides, hillsides and wetlands. It is distributed in most parts of the country.

[chemical constituents] the root contains tannin 7.6-27.5%, chrysophanol 19.3 mg% and Hyperoside. The fruit contains quercetin and Hyperoside.
[pharmacological action] because it contains acid potassium oxalate and some tartaric acid, it has a sour taste. Sometimes, it is poisoned because of excessive oxalic acid content. It has been reported in the literature that children died from eating Rumex leaf. Its water extract has antifungal (Trichophyton) effect.
