[plant morphology] ① Humulus scandens, also known as sijiaojin and shetonghuang.
Perennial herbs, tufted, 30-50 cm high. The root is red. Stem slender, quadrangular, glabrous or slightly pilose. Leaves 4-leaf whorls, ovate oblong, 1-2.5 cm long, 3-6 mm wide, apex pointed, upper and lower midrib sparsely short spined. The flowers are small, more than ten in axillary or terminal cymes; corolla yellowish green, about 2 mm in diameter, 4-lobed; stamens 4, ovary 2-locular, style 2, base united, stigma capitate. Suspensory fruit oblate, 2 mm in diam., with scalelike pubescence. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to July.
Born in Tianpan, Goubian and other wetlands. It is distributed in North China, the Yangtze River Basin and Fujian Province.
② Humulus scandens, also known as: small saw rattan.
Perennial herbs, 10-30 cm high. Its main feature is red yellow root. Stem glabrous. Leaves linear or lanceolate, 1-5 mm long. Corolla pale green, ca. 1 mm in diam. Suspensory fruit oblate semiglobose, ca. 1 mm in diam. The flowering period is July.
It is distributed in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
