Nettle
(Ben Cao Tu Jing)
Another name: xunma (a brief account of Yibu's prescription) and scorpion grass (a record of the sea of people).

[plant morphology] 1. Urtica Urtica, also known as? Ma.
Perennial herbs. Stem up to 150 cm, ribbed, stinging and appressed puberulent. The leaves are opposite, with pentagonal outline, 4-12 cm long and 3.5-12 cm wide, 3-lobed or 3-cleft, 1-lobed and pinnate, sparsely pubescent on both sides, sparsely stinging below; stipules free, narrowly triangular. The flowers are monoecious or monoecious. Inflorescence up to 12 cm, male inflorescence more branched; male flower diameter about 2 mm, perianth 4, stamen lead female perianth 4 deep split, after flowering increased, wrapped with fruit, up to 2.5 mm, pubescent and a few stings, stigma brush head. Perennial herbs. Stem 40-150 cm high, tetragonal, with stinging hairs, branched or unbranched. Leaves opposite, lanceolate or narrowly ovate, 4-10 cm long, 1.2-2.8 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded, margin acutely serrate, sparsely short hairy above, sparsely short hairy below along veins; stipules branched, strip-shaped. Dioecious, inflorescence 4 cm long, many branched; male perianth 4, stamen 4; female flower is smaller than male, perianth 4, enlarged in fruit stage, stigma brush head. Carpel ovate, flat, ca. 1 mm, smooth.
On hillside, forest or gully. It is distributed in the north and northeast of China.

Urtica fissa (distributed in Southwest China, Hubei and Zhejiang) and Urtica latifolia (distributed in North China and Northeast China) are also used for medicine.
