Perennial herbs, 20-30 cm high. The base of stem expanded. Leaves basal, linear, upper part slightly flat, lower part semicircular columnar, base widened into sheath. The stem is 5-30 cm high, with dense panicle raceme at the upper end; the flowers are small, yellow green, with short stalks; without bracts; perianth segments are 6, ovate, scalelike, arranged in 2 rings; stamens are 6, opposite perianth, few filaments; carpels are 6, style absent, stigma pinnate. The fruit is oblong, longitudinally furrowed and 6-valved at maturity. The flowering period is from June to July.

[chemical constituents] the young fruit, flower, mature fruit, stem and leaf all contain hydrocyanic acid, and trace amounts of acetaldehyde and ethanol. The leaf also contains piperidine acid-2. The cyanoglucoside isolated from flowers is called Ophiopogon japonicus, which is hydrolyzed to produce 2-butene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid.
