Perennial herbs, 4-10 cm high. The rhizome is thick and lignified with residual leaves at the upper end. Stem erect, angulate and white setae. Basal leaves rosette shaped, oblanceolate to elliptic, 3-9 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide, apex acute, leaf margin sparsely dentate and ciliate, basal part extending into a stalk, covered with coarsely pubescence on the top and attached with pubescence on the midrib below; cauline leaves smaller, lanceolate. Inflorescence terminal, up to 4 cm in diameter, involucre purple or with purple margin, with short tip, 4 rows, outer row lanceolate. Flowers all tubular, purple, bisexual, 2.5 cm long, apex 5-lobed, corolla pale brown, 2-row. Achenes glabrous. The flowering period is from July to August.
Born in high altitude grassland, roadside, foot of mountain. Distributed in Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Yunnan and other places.
On the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the whole herb of the same genus, Oriental Phoenix chrysanthemum, is used as medicine.
