Perennial herbs, 50-80 cm high. The tuberous roots are fat and toe like, overlapping each other. They are gray white and juicy when fresh, and black brown or yellow brown when dry. Stem erect, upper part branched, surface dark purple or green, ribbed. Leaves sessile; leaves long ovate lanceolate to ovate lanceolate, 2.5-8 cm long, 0.4-2 cm wide, apex narrowly pointed, base rounded, margin densely spiny, entire, upper green, sparsely hairy, lower gray green, densely covered with gray white felts. Inflorescence terminal, single or 2-4, 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter; bracts multilayer; flowers all tubular, purplish red to blue purple, tube shorter than eaves. Achenes pinnate. It blooms in summer.
It is found in riverbank, hillside grassland and forest margin. It is distributed in Northeast China.
