[plant morphology] Manjianghong
Floating plants, slightly triangular. Rhizome transverse, pinnate branched; fibrous roots many, hanging in water. The leaves are small, alternate, dense, arranged in two rows of imbricate shape on the nucleus, pear shaped, oblique square or oval, sessile; the leaves are green, red at maturity, with many milk like protuberances on the top and cavities below, containing colloid, in which cyanobacteria coexist. There are two kinds of sporophores, one is big and the other is small. They grow in pairs under the first leaf of the lateral branch. The megasporophore is small and long ovate. There is a megasporangium in the fruit, which contains one megaspore. The microsporophore is large and spherical. There are many microsporangia in the fruit, each containing 64 microspores.
In paddy fields or ponds. It is distributed in southwest, South and central China.

[medicinal material] it is a dry whole grass, with small triangular leaves and dense twigs, shrunken into flakes with a diameter of about 4 mm. It is yellowish green on the top and purplish brown or reddish brown on the bottom; it has many fine fibrous roots and is muddy gray. It's light in weight and airless. The best color is red.
