Perennial herbs. The fibrous roots are thick and hard. Culms tufted, erect, 30-100 cm high, often densely pilose below inflorescence. The leaf blade is linear, 15-50 cm long, 2-6 mm wide, apex long acuminate, usually involute. Spike panicle, 5-20 cm long, spindle hard, densely pilose; peduncle 2-3 mm long, densely pilose; setae 1-2.5 cm long, with upward tiny scabrous spines, usually black purple after maturity, spikelets usually solitary, 6-8 mm long; the first glume minute, ovate, veins unclear; the second glume with 3-5 veins, 1 / 2-2 / 3 of the spikelet; the first lemma herbaceous, with 7-11 veins, similar to the spikelet The spikes are as long as spikelets, and the margins often contain grains; the grains are cartilaginous, lanceolate, and as long as spikelets; the anther tips are glabrous. Fruit flat oblong, ca. 3. 5 mm long. The flowering and fruiting stages are autumn and winter.
Most of them grow on farmland, roadside or hillside. It is widely distributed in the north and south of China.
