Perennial small shrubby herbs. Stem creeping, rooting everywhere, many branches, the lower part of the lignified, reddish brown, straight branches, 3-15 cm high, with a strong aroma. Leaves opposite; small, oblong or ovate, 15 mm long, 7 mm wide, entire, obtuse, base setose, shortly stipitate. The flowers are small, purplish red, clustered at the ends of the branches, forming a cymbidium flower spike: calyx green, calyx tube bell shaped, apex 5-lobed, throat hairy; corolla lip shaped, lower lip 3-lobed; stamens 4, 2-strong; pistil 1. Nutlets elliptic at base of persistent calyx. The flowering period is from June to July.

It grows on sandy land of dry hillside. Distributed in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Shaanxi, northeast and other places.

Wild thyme is also used for medicine. Its characteristics are as follows: the stem is sparsely retroflexed pilose. Leaves elliptic to oblong lanceolate, 5-10 mm long and 3-5 mm wide. Flowers small, purplish red; calyx margin and throat with white hairs; corolla longer than calyx. Nutlets ca. 1 mm long.
