Annual aquatic herbs. Floating leaves usually oblique square or triangular rhombic, 2-5 cm long and 2-7 cm wide, smooth on the top, slightly villous on the main veins below, sharp teeth on the upper edge, broadly cuneate at the base, entire; petiole 5-10 cm long. Flowers white, axillary. There are sharp spines on the four or two corners of the fruit, which are green. The upper two spines extend upward and the lower two spines face downward. The fruit stalk is thin and short. The flowering period is from July to August. The fruit ripens in October.
Wild in ponds or ditches. It is distributed in the Yangtze River Basin.
