[chemical composition] the amount and composition of ash vary with plant species. For fresh plants, the ash content is close to 0.2%, especially for tobacco, which is close to 20%, but for general plants, the ash content is usually 1-6%. The ash is mainly composed of potassium oxide, silicon dioxide and calcium oxide, but it also contains sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur and trace manganese, boron and copper.

[clinical application] ① treatment of Kaschin Beck disease

469 patients with Kashin Beck disease in prodromal stage and grade I, II and III were observed by using plant ash extract. After taking medicine for more than 20 days, 284 patients (60.6%) were clinically cured, 114 patients (24.3%) were significantly improved, 54 patients (11.5%) were improved, and 17 patients (3.6%) were ineffective. With the aggravation of the disease, the curative effect also decreased. The shortest time of curative effect was 2 days and the longest was 210 days. The fastest cure time was 7 days, and the slowest was 330 days, especially within 4 months. 69 cases were followed up for 10 months. Results 1 case recurred after 5 months. Preparation and usage: take 3 catties of miscellaneous plant ash (ash from various weeds or branches), add 10 catties of water, fully stir, soak for 24 hours, filter, take clear liquid, heat and concentrate to 2 catties. Take 30-40 ml each time, 3 times a day, for 6 months. Or heat the extract of plant ash and continue to concentrate it into crystal; dry mulberry flowers or leaves in the sun and grind them into powder, mix them in a ratio of 1:1 to make water pills of soybean size, 30 pills each time, 3 times a day. Plant ash can also be mixed with water, heated and boiled to make concentrated decoction, filtered and taken. The dosage and usage are the same as the leaching solution. There were no side effects except nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain, diarrhea and dry mouth.

② Treatment of Keshan disease

69 cases of latent Keshan disease were treated with plant ash extract. After 3 months of treatment, 3 cases were cured (signs disappeared, ECG and X-ray cardiogram returned to normal), 10 cases were improved and 4 cases were aggravated. Among them, 25 cases persisted in treatment for 6 months, 4 cases were cured and improved after 3 months of treatment, and 1 case was aggravated; when continued treatment for 6 months, 4 cases were further improved and recovered, and 1 case was aggravated. It seems that the curative effect is related to the course of treatment. However, 37 cases were treated and compared with 27 cases who did not take medicine. After 3 months, it was found that the symptoms, signs and ECG changes of the two groups were similar, but the patients in the control group were slightly more serious than those in the treatment group, mainly with more cases of enlarged heart. Therefore, the therapeutic effect of plant ash is not obvious, and whether it has a certain role in preventing the development of the disease is uncertain. In addition, 10 cases of chronic Keshan disease were treated with plant ash extract. After 3 months, most of the patients' symptoms were improved in varying degrees, but the improvement of physical signs and cardiac function was not obvious. The preparation of plant ash leaching solution is the same as before. Dosage: 5ml under 5 years old, 10ml from 6 to 10 years old, 15ml from 11 to 15 years old, 20ml above 16 years old, 3 times a day; or 5ml under 9 years old, 10ml from 9 to 17 years old, 15ml above 17 years old, 1 time in the morning and 1 time in the evening. The side effects were the same as before.
