Life of the characters
Early experience
Zhang family in Wuwei County was originally a powerful family in Liangzhou. Zhang Xiu is the nephew of General Zhang Ji. When Bian Zhang and Han Sui were in trouble in Liangzhou, Liao Sheng of Jincheng attacked and killed Liu Jun, the ancestor of Li Chang. Zhang Xiu was a county official at that time, and soon found a chance to assassinate Liao Sheng. People in the county thought he was very loyal, so Zhang Xiu recruited young people and became a hero in Liangzhou.
In the third year of Chuping (192), Dong Zhuo was killed by Lu Bu. Zhang Ji, Li Yi and Guo Si attacked Chang'an to avenge Dong Zhuo. Zhang Xiu followed Zhang Ji and rose to the rank of general Jianzhong and Marquis Xuanwei.
Occupying Wancheng
In the first year of Jian'an (196), Zhang Ji was short of food in the army. He led troops from Guanzhong to Jingzhou, fought with Liu Biao, attacked the city, and died in zhongliuya. Zhang Xiu took over his troops and withdrew from Shacheng. Officials in Jingzhou congratulated Liu Biao. However, Liu Biao said, "Zhang Ji has come at a dead end, but I am so rude as the host. This is not my intention. Therefore, I only receive condolence, not congratulations. "After that, Liu Biao sent people to seduce the rest of Zhang Ji's troops, and the public was overjoyed at the news, and they all obeyed. Liu Biao then arranged Zhang Xiu to garrison in Wancheng, and Zhang Xiu became Liu Biao's vassal force in the north to defend him against foreign enemies.
Meet Cao Cao
In the second year of Jian'an (197), Cao Cao went to the South and his troops arrived at Gushui. Zhang Xiu led the people to surrender. Cao Cao took Zhang Ji's widow, Mrs. Zou, and Zhang Xiu hated Cao Cao. When Cao Cao heard that Zhang Xiu was not happy, he secretly prepared to kill her. As a result, the plan leaked. Zhang Xiu attacked Cao Cao secretly. Cao Cao was defeated. Cao ang, his eldest son, and Cao Anmin, his nephew, were killed. Zhang Xiu led his troops to pursue him and was repulsed by Cao Cao, so Zhang Xiu returned to defend the city and allied with Liu Biao again. (Fu Zi says: Cao Cao gives a gift to Hu che'er, Zhang Xiu's confidant. After hearing about it, Zhang Xiu suspects that Cao Cao wants to use Hu che'er to assassinate him. He uses Jia Xu to plot against him.)
In March of the third year of Jian'an (198), Cao Cao attacked Zhang Xiu to the South and surrounded the city where Zhang Xiu held. Soon, when Cao Cao heard that Yuan Shao wanted to take advantage of Xu Du, he immediately withdrew from the city. Zhang Xiu led his troops to follow him. Liu Biao also sent Jingzhou army to occupy Anzhong, cut off Cao's retreat, and tried to attack Cao with Zhang Xiu. Cao Cao defeated Zhang and Liu by surprise. After Cao's victory, he quickly moved north. Zhang Xiu personally led his troops to pursue him. Jia Xu dissuaded him and said, "you can't pursue him. If you pursue him, you will lose." Zhang Xiu did not listen, forced pursuit, was personally defeated by Cao Cao. Jia Xu then said to Zhang Xiu, "hurry up and catch up, you will win." Zhang Xiu said: "I didn't listen to your suggestion. Now I'm defeated. Why should I pursue it again?" Jia Xu said: "the situation has changed. Go and make profits as soon as possible." Zhang Xiu followed Jia Xu's advice, collected scattered troops, and then pursued them, but defeated Cao Cao's guard.
After the victory, Zhang Xiu asked Jia Xu what was going on. Jia Xu explained: "this (truth) is very easy to understand. Although the general is good at using troops, he is by no means the enemy of Cao Gong. Although Cao's army has just withdrawn, Cao Gong must be in the rear of the palace. Although our pursuers are excellent, our generals can't match them. Their soldiers have great morale, so I know you will be defeated, general. The reason why Cao Cao withdrew his troops before he tried his best must be that something happened in the rear. Therefore, after he broke the general's pursuit, he would retreat with all his strength and leave others behind. Although the generals he left were powerful, they were not as good as the general. Therefore, I know that a general can win with defeat. " Zhang Xiu was greatly admired.
Demote Cao and make contributions
In 199, Zhang Xiu obeyed Jia Xu's suggestion and surrendered to Cao Cao again. After Zhang Xiu arrived, Cao Cao took Zhang Xiu by the hand and took part in the banquet together. He married Zhang Xiu's daughter for his son Cao Jun and made Zhang Xiu Yang's general.
In the fifth year of Jian'an (200 years), Zhang Xiu took part in the battle of Guandu, made great contributions to the battle, and was promoted to the general of breaking Qiang.
In the 10th year of Jian'an (205), Zhang Xiu followed Cao Cao to defeat Yuan Tan in Nanpi, and increased the number of food towns again, with a total of 2000 households. At that time, the number of registered households in the world dropped sharply, leaving only one household in ten households. Among the generals, there were not as many as 1000, but Zhang Xiu was the only one.
Death
In the 12th year of Jian'an (207), Zhang Xiu followed Cao Cao to Liucheng to beg Wu Huan. Before she arrived, she died. She was named Marquis Ding and her son Zhang Quan succeeded her. Wei Lue records that Cao Pi, the general of the five sense organs, was dissatisfied with Zhang Xiu because of Cao Ang's death. He said, "you killed my elder brother. What face can you see?" Zhang Xiu was upset and committed suicide. However, Cao Pi became the five senses Zhonglang in 211 A.D. (the 16th year of Jian'an). There was a conflict in time, which should be based on the annals of the Three Kingdoms.
Zhang Xiu's son, Zhang Quan, was appointed captain Yue. But later, he was involved in Wei Xi's rebellion, which was regarded as the killing of his accomplices.

Character evaluation
Chen Shou: Yan, Xiu and Lu shequn were thieves. They were meritorious officials. They went to danger and protected zongsi.
Jia Xu: Although the general is good at using troops, he is not Cao's public enemy. Although the army retreats, Cao Gong will be cut off; although the pursuer is good, he will not be defeated, and he is also sharp, so he knows that he will be defeated. Cao Gong has no blunder in attacking the general. If he retreats before his strength is exhausted, there must be a reason in the country. If he has defeated the general, he must advance quickly and leave the generals behind. Although the generals are brave, they are not the enemy of the general. Therefore, he will win even if he uses the defeated troops to fight.
Zhang Fu: Xuande was covered by Lu Xun, but if Emperor Wu was trapped by Zhang Xiu, he would flee to lose his second son. If Gaozu died in Pengcheng, the world would not be as good as Xiang Yu. When Emperor Wu died in Wanxia, he would not be as good as Zhang Xiu.

In some folk storytelling, Zhang Xiu was granted the title of "Marquis of Wancheng", known as the "king of guns in the north", and made a golden gun with a tiger head. Zhang Xiu is the great apprentice of Tong Yuan, a famous martial artist. In the battle of Wan City, Hu che'er stole Dian Wei's two halberds, and then he was able to pick Dian Wei with a gun. His "hundred birds towards the Phoenix gun" was a great success. Later, he fought with Zhao Yun for 300 rounds and was killed by Zhao Yun's seven probe snake plate gun. Since then, Zhao Yun has become the real king of guns. Zhang Ren and Zhang Xiujun both studied under Tong Yuan. Zhao Yun is Tong Yuan's close disciple. Tong Yuan is Zhang Xiu's, Zhang Ren's and Zhao Yun's master. Tong Yuan originally only accepted two apprentices, one was Zhang Xiu, the "Marquis of Wancheng", the other was Zhang Ren, the governor of Xichuan. They both learned his "hundred birds shooting at the Phoenix gun" and gained a high reputation. Tong Yuan lived in seclusion in the mountains in his later years. After Zhao Yun prayed for worship, he accepted Zhao Yun as his disciple. After Zhao yunyicheng went down the mountain, he created a set of "seven probe snake plate gun". There is no such description in romance of the Three Kingdoms and annals of the Three Kingdoms.
