Dong He

Dong he (year of birth and death unknown), the word Youzai. South County Zhijiang county (now Hubei Zhijiang) people. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, officials of the Shu Han Dynasty.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Dong he led his family to move to the West. Under Liu Zhang, he successively served as the county magistrate of niuxuan, Jiangyuan and Chengdu. During his tenure, he set an example and improved the atmosphere of advocating luxury. Later, he moved to Yizhou, where he got along well with ethnic minorities and won their love. In the 19th year of Jian'an (214), Liu Bei captured Yizhou and ordered Dong He to be the commander in chief of the army. He and Zhuge Liang jointly presided over the affairs of his own government.

Dong He, named Youzai, was born in Zhijiang, Nanjun county. His ancestors were originally from Jiangzhou (now Chongqing) in Bajun. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Dong he led his family to move to the West. Later, he was appointed by Liu Zhang, a herdsman of Yizhou, as the magistrate of niuxuan, Jiangyuan and Chengdu. Shu is rich in natural resources. At that time, luxury prevailed. In business, they dressed like princes and ate like jade. When they got married and were buried, they almost spent all their money on extravagance. Dong he set an example for the public by his frugality. He was a vegetarian in coarse clothes and followed the rules of etiquette everywhere. As a result, the local luxury atmosphere changed greatly. Everyone was afraid of him and did not dare to offend him. Because of the fear of Dong he's strictness, some powerful people in the county encouraged Liu Zhang to transfer Dong He to be the vassal of Badong. However, he did not expect that there were thousands of officials and people supporting the old and carrying the young to retain Dong He in Chengdu county. Liu Zhang had to let Dong he stay for two years, and then he was promoted to the prefect of Yizhou county. He was as clean and thrifty as before. When dealing with the ethnic minorities around him, he always treats each other sincerely, so he is deeply trusted and loved by the ethnic minorities in the south.

Poverty and frugality

In 214 A.D. (the 19th year of Jian'an), after Liu Bei pacified Yizhou, he recruited Dong He as Zhonglang general in charge of the army, and jointly presided over the affairs of Zuo general and Da Sima Fu with Zhuge Liang. They gave advice, worked together, and had a deep friendship. Since Dong he became a resident official, he has managed to pacify the ethnic minorities in the border areas, and participated in military affairs. For more than 20 years, when he died, he had no grain in his family.

Deeply remembered

In 221 A.D. (the first year of Zhangwu), when Zhuge Liang was the prime minister, he warned his subordinates: "to participate in the work of the country, we must concentrate the wisdom and loyalty of all people. If you care about trifles, it will be difficult to inform each other and bring losses to all kinds of work. To be able to exchange information is like throwing away a broken shoe and getting a pearl; however, people are suffering from the fact that they can't get rid of these trifles. Only Xu Yuanzhi (Xu Shu) is not confused in dealing with such problems. Then, when Dong Youzai (Dong He) worked in the central government for seven years, he came to the court even if he went back and forth ten times. If I can do one tenth of Xu Yuanzhi's, work diligently and be loyal to the country like Dong Youzai, then my faults will be much less! " He added: "in the past, when I first made friends with Cui Zhouping (Cui Jun), I often heard him comment on my gains and losses. Later, when I made friends with Xu Yuanzhi, I was always inspired and induced by him. Before he worked with Dong Youzai, he always talked about everything. Later, when he worked with Hu Weidu (Hu Ji), he often heard his advice. Although I am humble and obstinate, and can not fully adopt their opinions, I have always been friendly with these four people, which is enough to prove that they do not doubt the benefits of being outspoken. " Zhuge Liang deeply missed Dong He.

Historical evaluation

Zhuge Liang said: "when Dong Youzai took part in the office for seven years, nothing happened. As for the ten evils, he came to inform me. If you can admire Yuan Zhi's 11th birthday, if you are diligent and loyal to your country, you can be less brilliant. " Chen Shou: "Dong he dances like a lamb."

Commemoration of later generations

The hall of marquis Wu in the southern suburb of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is located in the west corridor of the west side hall of Liubei hall. Fourteen statues are carved to commemorate the Wen Chen corridor of the Shu Han Dynasty. The statue of Dong He, the sixth in the list, was made in the 29th year of Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1849 AD). The 14 statues of Wen Chen were Pang Tong, Jian Yong, Lu Kai, Fu Yi, Fei Yi, Dong He, Deng Zhi, Chen Zhen, Jiang Wan, Dong Yun, Qin MI, Yang Hong, Ma Liang and Cheng Ji.

Textual research on the year of death

The year of Dong he's death is not clearly recorded in the biography of Dong He in the annals of the Three Kingdoms, but some clues can be seen from the content of this biography. When Zhuge Liang warned his subordinates after he became prime minister, he said that Dong Youzai had been in charge for seven years. However, Dong he was called up to work with Zhuge Liang after Liu Bei conquered Yizhou in the 19th year of Jian'an (214). In 221, when Zhuge Liang became emperor Liu Bei, he was Prime Minister and Lu Shang, and Dong he should have died before that. Therefore, to sum up, it is reasonable that Dong he should have died in the 25th year of Jian'an (220).

Literary image

In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the image of Dong he is basically the same as that of the official history. During the period of Liu Bei's attack on Shu, he advocated borrowing troops from Zhang Lu, which led Ma Chao to go out; later, when Chengdu was surrounded, he tried to prevent Liu Zhang from surrendering to Liu Bei.
