I had to leave. Zhang Kui's wife was ill and needed to go hundreds of miles away to pick up the doctor. At that time, it was snowy and cold, and the chief clerk and other subordinates were embarrassed. Only Tao Kan said, "to serve the king and the father is to serve the minister and the son. The princess's wife, just like our mother, can't have any parents who are sick and the children don't do their best." So he asked to go. Everyone admired his courtesy. In the second year of Yongxing (305), Chen Min, the governor of Yangzhou, saw that the North was in chaos and the imperial court was unable to control the east of the Yangtze River, so he set up troops to occupy Yangzhou and sent his younger brother Chen Hui to attack Wuchang along Jiangxi Province, intending to take over the south of the Yangtze River. Liu Hong ordered Tao Kan to be the governor of Jiangxia and general Yingyang, and led the army to resist Chen Hui. Tao Kan had a complete guard of honor and brought his mother to the official house, which made the whole village feel honored. In Suijun, Shi huhuai provoked Liu Hong and said, "Tao Kan and Chen Min have a friendship of the same hometown. Now he is the prefect of the county, commanding a strong army. If he has a different heart, Jingzhou will lose its east gate." Liu Hong replied, "Tao Kan is honest and capable. I've known him for a long time. He won't be like this." When Tao Kan heard about it, he sent his son Tao Hong and nephew Tao Zhen to Liu Hong to strengthen Liu Hong's trust in him. Liu Hong allowed them to join the army, gave them rewards, and sent them back to Jiangxia. He said: "Uncle Xian is going to travel, but grandma is old. You should go back. Hua Yi has always been at odds with Sima Rui, the king of Langxie. Tao Zhen worries about the disaster in the future. He comes back to Tao Kan on the pretext of illness and tells him: "Hua Yanxia (Hua Yi) has great ambition to worry about the world, but he doesn't have much talent. He has conflicts with the king of Langxie, and the disaster is coming." Tao Kan is very angry and sends Tao Zhen back to Huayi. Tao Zhen takes the opportunity to invest in Sima Rui. From then on, the water and land traffic was safe and smooth. There were a lot of fugitives returning home. Tao Kan tried his best to help them settle down and set up a market to trade with foreigners in the east of the county.

Sima Rui sent taokan to attack Du Zhen, and ordered general Zhenwei Zhou to visit and general Guangwu Zhao to be under the command of taokan. As expected, Du Zhen came to attack. Tao Kan ordered Zhu Ji to lead an ambush to attack him head-on, smashing Du Zhen, seizing a large number of supplies and killing many enemy soldiers. Du Zhen's defeated army retreated to Changsha. Tao Kan sent Wang Gong to report his victory to Wang dun. Wang Dun said, "if it were not for Tao Hou, Jingzhou would be lost. As soon as Boren (Zhou Yi) arrived, he was defeated by the bandits. I don't know how he can be an assassin? " Wang Gong said, "we are in Jingzhou
