Life of the characters
Family background
Li Yuan is the descendant of Li Li, the founder of Xiliang in the period of Sixteen States. Li Hu, Li Yuan's grandfather, was a Taiwei in the Western Wei Dynasty. He joined the Prime Minister Yu Wentai, Li Bi, the Taibao, and Duguxin, the great Sima. He was one of the eight kingdoms in the Western Wei Dynasty and was granted the surname Daye. After receiving Zen in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Li Hu was granted the title of Duke of Tang. The name of the Tang Dynasty can be traced back to this. After Yang Jian became the Prime Minister of emperor Jing of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, he returned his surname. Li Tang, Li Yuan's father, was a senior official of the Northern Zhou Dynasty. Li Yuan's mother is the sister of Dugu Jialuo, the empress of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty.
Li Yuan was born in Chang'an on November 24, the first year of the Northern Zhou Dynasty (566). When Li Yuan was seven years old, his father Li Tai died, and he was granted the title of Duke of Tang. When Li Yuan grew up, he was free and easy, cheerful and tolerant. No matter how noble or humble he was, he was welcomed by him.
In 581, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty was abdicated by Emperor Jing of the Northern Zhou Dynasty and established the Sui Dynasty. Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty appointed Li Yuan as qianniubei (emperor's military officer). As Li Yuan's aunt was the only empress of Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty paid close attention to Li Yuan. At that time, there was a good face-to-face man named Shi Shiliang. He once said that Li Yuan's bone skills were very good and that he would establish an imperial career in the future. He hoped that he would keep his body clean and protect himself. After hearing this, Li Yuan was very conceited.
Serve the Sui court
At the beginning of emperor Yang's accession to the throne, Li Yuan was the prefect of Xingyang (now Xingyang City, Henan Province) and Loufan (now jingle County, Shanxi Province). Later, he was appointed as Shaojian and Weiwei Shaoqing.
In the spring of 613, when Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty conquered Koguryo, Li Yuan supervised the transportation of grain and grass in Huaiyuan town. In June of the same year, Yang Xuangan took advantage of the people's indignation to fight against the Sui Dynasty. Li Yuan was appointed by Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty to guard Honghua county (now Qingyang County, Gansu Province), and also knew the military affairs of Guanyou. During this period, Li Yuan made friends with the world's heroes and was suspected by Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty. It happened that an imperial edict ordered Li Yuan to go to the place where emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty visited. Li Yuan didn't go because of illness. At that time, Li Yuan's nephew, the Queen's family, was in the back palace. Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty asked Wang, "why is your uncle so late?" Wang replied that Li Yuan was ill, and Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty asked, "is the sick dying?" After Li Yuan knew about it, he became more and more afraid, so he drank alcohol and bribed himself to protect himself.
In the 11th year of Daye (615), Li Yuan was transferred to Hedong comfort Ambassador of Shanxi Province. When he arrived at Longmen, he met the peasant uprising of his mother. Li Yuan led the army and defeated the uprising army. He recruited more than 10000 people and greatly increased his strength. He also attacked Chai Baochang, a thief in Jiangzhou. He demoted tens of thousands of people and was promoted to youxiaowei general the next year. When the Turks invaded the frontier fortress, Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty asked him and Wang rengong, the governor of Mayi, to attack the Turks North together. But they have very few troops. Li Yuan then selected 2000 cavalry who were good at riding and shooting, ate, lived, rode and arched, and imitated the Turkic soldiers to show them how to shoot and gallop in their spare time. Li Yuan had another soldier who was good at archery as an ambush. When he met with the Turks, Li Yuan ordered an ambush attack and defeated the Turks.
Taiyuan to fight
In 617, the 13th year of Daye of emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty, Li Yuan was officially appointed as the palace supervisor of Taiyuan and Jinyang, and became the highest military and political officer in this area. Li Yuan was ordered to lead his troops to fight against Zhen Zhaier, a mountain flying thief. They met with Zhen Zhaier in the bird and mouse valley of Hexi county (now Fenyang City, Shanxi Province), and Li Yuan won a complete victory.
In the process of suppressing the peasant uprising, Li Yuan accepted rebellion and constantly expanded his strength. Li Shimin, the son of Li Yuan, knew that Sui Dynasty would be doomed. He secretly made friends with heroes, recruited fugitives and recruited all kinds of talents.
Troops against the Sui Dynasty swarmed up, and the Jiangdu (now Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province), where emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty lived, was isolated. Liu Wenjing and Pei Ji are close friends of Li Shimin. Li Shimin and Liu Wenjing, the magistrate of Jinyang County, conspired to fight. Li Yuan didn't know about the plan for the uprising. Li Shimin wanted to tell the truth, but he was worried that Li Yuan would not listen. Li Shimin goes to Pei Ji to discuss in private. Pei Ji chooses some beauties from Jinyang palace to accompany him for the night after Li Yuan gets drunk. Then Pei Ji tells Li Yuan about Li Shimin's plan. Li Yuan is shocked. Pei Ji said: "the arrangement of maid in waiting is to kill your head when it's exposed. I do it to persuade you to make up your mind to fight." Li Shimin took the opportunity to report the whole plan to Li Yuan. At the beginning, Li Yuan resolutely disagreed and said that he would send Li Shimin to the newspaper office. After a while, Li Yuan agreed to fight and said to Li Shimin, "I love you. How can I have the heart to report you?"
In February of 617, the 13th year of Daye, Liu Wuzhou, commander of Yingyang, who was stationed in Mayi (now Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province), launched a mutiny and killed Wang rengong, the prefect of Mayi, claiming to be the son of heaven. In the third month of the lunar calendar, Liu Wuzhou conquered Loufan County, occupied Fenyang palace, and colluded with Turks to fight for the world. After hearing the news, Emperor Yang was furious and asked Li Yuan to go to Jiangdu for punishment. In this critical situation, Li Shimin said, "it's urgent. We can do something about it." His confidants Pei Ji, Xu Shixu and samurai Huang also urged Li Yuan to fight against the Sui Dynasty. As a result, Li Yuan sent Li Shimin, Liu Wenjing, Chang sun Shunde, Liu Hongji and others to various places to recruit soldiers on the pretext of preventing Liu Wuzhou and Turks from going south. In a very short time, he recruited thousands of people.
When Wang Wei and Gao Junya, deputy left behind in Taiyuan, saw Li Yuan recruiting troops and horses and suspected that Li Yuan was going to revolt, they plotted to cheat Li Yuan and his son to pray for rain in Jinci temple, get rid of Li's family and ask emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty for credit. Unexpectedly, Liu Shilong, head of Jinyang Township, learned of the plot and informed Li Yuan.
On May 15, 617, Li Yuan and Li Shimin preempted and ordered Liu Zhenghui, Sima of Kaiyang Prefecture, to report that Wang Wei and Gao Junya secretly colluded with Turks and led Turks to invade the Central Plains, thus imprisoning them. On May 17, when tens of thousands of Turkic troops attacked Jinyang, Li Yuan immediately ordered them to be decapitated. In June, Li Jiancheng, his second son, and Li Shimin led the army to attack Gao Deru, the Chengde of Xihe County, who refused his life. At the same time, Li Yuan set up an empty city plan to scare off the Turkic army. Then, Li Yuan began to make preparations to fight against the Sui Dynasty.

After the oath, Li Yuan, his eldest son Jiancheng and his second son Shimin sent their troops to the south.
