His architectural design and watercolor painting were guided by Paul Kerry and Walter Dawson, and his academic performance was excellent. In 1924, he successively won the first prize of Emerson award in the national architecture student design competition. In 1926, he left the United States for Europe to investigate architecture. In 1927, he returned to China and joined Jitai engineering department. First, Guan Songsheng, then Zhu bin, Yang Tingbao and Yang Kuanlin formed an architectural firm (later, Liang Yan and Zhang Kai also participated for some time). Yang Tingbao is the main person in charge of architectural design (his works are all called Jitai Engineering Department, regardless of personal name).
After the 1930s, he turned to Shanghai and Nanjing and traveled all over the country. Huagai architects, which cooperated with Zhao Shen, Chen Zhi and Tong Yi, was one of the influential architectural firms at that time. Yang Tingbao worked in the firm until 1949. Since 1940, he has been a professor of architecture at Central University. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he has successively held the posts of Professor of Architecture Department of Nanjing University, Professor, chairman, vice president of Architecture Department of Nanjing Institute of technology, director of Architecture Research Institute, member of technology and science department of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and chairman of the fifth Council of Chinese Architectural Society.
Life of the characters
In February 1901, Yang Tingbao was born in Nanyang, Henan Province. His father Yang heting was not only a member of the alliance, but also an educator. He set up public welfare, founded schools, set up factories and farms, and took the road of saving the country through education and industry. Yang Tingbao's mother was knowledgeable and good at calligraphy and painting. When she gave birth to Yang Tingbao, she died of massive bleeding. Therefore, Yang Tingbao's life was no more than a birthday. In 1906, Yang entered Fang's private school. Under my professor, I first read the book of Hundred Surnames, the Three Character Classic and the poems of thousand families, and then read the book of songs, the Analects of Confucius and Mencius. Every book must be written from the beginning to the end in regular script. Yang Tingbao was disgusted with rote learning and gradually developed the idea of dropping out of school. In the years after leaving the private school, Yang Tingbao copied calligraphy and paintings and read poetry at home. In 1910, his father sent him to a primary school in Nanyang city and lived in a quadrangle in Union Street in the center of the city. In 1911, Mr. Yang heting, who was one of the leaders of the Nanyang alliance, organized the revolutionary armed forces and prepared to wait for an opportunity to revolt. Unexpectedly, the secret leaked, Yang heting was wanted by the Qing government. Yang Tingbao fled with his family in the starry night. 1912-1915, he studied in the Preparatory School of Europe and America in Henan (now Henan University). In February 1912, the revolutionary army recovered Nanyang. Yang heting was elected as the first Nanyang magistrate after the 1911 Revolution. Three months later, Yang heting resigned because he opposed Yuan Shikai. Yang Tingbao's father and Mr. Wang Yuanbai, a famous scholar in Nanyang, were very good friends, so he let Yang Tingbao learn from Mr. Wang. During the period of the Republic of China, Mr. Wang was the assistant editor in chief of the mountains and rivers in the geographical records. Mr. Wang helped Yang Tingbao a lot in his studies, which made him interested in art and architectural design. Mr. Wang is also a famous martial arts master. Yang Tingbao learned a lot of fitness skills from his mentor. Mr. Yang heting saw that his son had made great progress, so he wanted his son to apply to Henan preparatory school for studying in Europe and America. in 1915, Henan preparatory school for studying in the United States, due to financial constraints, wanted to reduce the scale. The school authorities encouraged students to apply for Tsinghua preparatory school for studying in the United States in Beijing. At that time, Tsinghua preparatory school to study in the United States was already famous in China, and its admission was strict. First, it is recommended by key schools. Then, the promotion envoy set up by the provincial capital and the Tsinghua preparatory school for studying in the United States send senior staff to invigilate the first examination. Finally, the provincial examination records students and goes to Beijing for the second examination. This year, Tsinghua preparatory school in the United States only allocated seven admission places in Henan. Yang Tingbao, who has only studied in Henan preparatory school for studying in the United States for two years, never forgets his father's admonition that "where there is a will, there is a way to go" and "to learn culture and science, there must be a skill". He was recommended by the school authorities to apply for Tsinghua preparatory school for studying in the United States. Two months later, Beijing re reported that Yang Tingbao still ranked first among the seven candidates admitted in Henan. In the autumn of 1921, Yang Tingbao was admitted to the Department of architecture, University of Pennsylvania. Just two and a half years and four years of study. At that time, the United States often engaged in architectural Student Design Award activities. Yang Tingbao won the first prize in 1924 American Urban Art Association Design Competition and Emerson design competition for his exquisite works. Several local newspapers in Philadelphia and other places have published his deeds and photos. His two design works were also selected into the book "principles of architectural design", which later became the teaching materials for the architectural departments of many national universities in the 1930s and 1940s. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1921 and went to the Department of architecture, University of Pennsylvania in the same year. After graduation in 1926, he went to Europe to investigate architecture. In 1927, he returned to China and joined Jitai engineering department. He was the main person in charge of architectural design and worked in the office until 1949. In 1932, after returning to China, Yang Tingbao was employed by the Beiping cultural relics management committee to take part in and preside over the renovation of ancient buildings. In September 1936, in the third issue of the sixth volume of the Journal of China construction society, the tour record of ancient buildings in Zhengbian was published, in which the Kaifeng iron tower, Fanta and other ancient buildings were introduced in detail. During this period, he also designed the Catholic nunnery in Kaifeng (now building 2 in Kaifeng Hotel). The building is a combination of Chinese and western, exquisite workmanship and exquisite decoration. In 1940, he was employed by Liu Dunzhen and concurrently served as a professor of Architecture Department of Central University; in 1949, Central University was renamed National Nanjing University and became a full-time professor and director of Architecture Department of Nanjing University. In 1952, Nanjing University adjusted its faculties and departments, and established Nanjing Institute of Technology (renamed Southeast University in 1988) on the basis of Engineering College of Nanjing University. Yang Tingbao became professor and director of Architecture Department of Nanjing Institute of technology. In 1955, he was elected member (academician) of the Ministry of technology and science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was vice president of Nanjing Institute of technology in 1959 and director of Institute of architecture of Nanjing Institute of technology in 1979. In the same year, he served as vice governor of Jiangsu Province. died in Nanjing on December 23, 1982.
Main achievements
Achievements in scientific research
One of the important founders of modern architectural design science in China. In the creation of architectural style with Chinese characteristics, made a significant contribution. Over the past 50 years, we have completed more than 100 kinds of architectural engineering designs. In the design work, it is advocated to draw on the strengths of various schools, to be inclusive, to be brave in innovation, to pay attention to suit measures to local conditions, and to emphasize that it is in line with the national conditions. The design works have a steady, dignified, rigorous and solemn style. In 1955, he was selected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

personnel training
Mr. Yang Tingbao has been committed to the teaching of architecture for a long time and has trained many talents for the country. He is rigorous in his academic research and does not talk about empty words. He thinks that all empty words and ambition are taboos of scholars. He practices them and educates young people to be practical masters. When changing the architectural design drawings, he is always docile and willing to teach people. He first listens to the students' design ideas, and then carefully changes the drawings according to your ideas, so as to meet the design requirements. He didn't force the students to copy the pictures that the teacher had changed. He thought that it was difficult to inspire the students to think independently. In the design, he specially emphasized the practice of multi scheme comparison and quick sketch, and thought that it was necessary to cultivate students to have extensive knowledge. He thinks that architects are different from ordinary artists. Their creation must be based on material. They can't do without extensive social and scientific and technological knowledge, diligent learning, diligent observation and analysis. In architecture teaching, he attaches great importance to the training of basic skills, and has strict requirements on students' practice. In terms of learning methods, he attached great importance to investigation, mapping and observation. He often said: "the accumulation of information is the source of architectural creation." And he said, "pay attention everywhere, you will learn." He is good at observing and analyzing architectural works. He often teaches engineering experience in combination with practical engineering design. He has been to many countries and cities, and always warns students to study very hard with his own views and experience summary
