Character evaluation
As a representative of the fourth generation of directors, Xie Fei's rigorous and open academic attitude is impressive. We can see the strength of a generation of filmmakers from him. Xie Fei often pays attention to the lack of life, the lack of human nature, and the suffering and pain of human frustration. The teaching profession is one of the important differences between Xie Fei and other directors of the fourth generation. It is also an important reason why his works can run through serious philosophical thinking and humanistic spirit. In the process of talking with Xie Fei, he will be unconsciously infected by his artistic ideal. He can constantly look at the world with aesthetic vision, live forever with gratitude, and live poetically on this earth. (CCTV online review)
Xie Fei's films carry out his affirmation and hope for the value of life. Although his works repeat the loss of love and female tragedy, he never shows life with destruction and despair. His tragic consciousness always contains warmth and tolerance, persistently showing a ray of ideal light. This kind of value orientation is in perfect harmony with his soft and beautiful image system, which is regarded as the aesthetic display of thoughts by some critics, while others refer to it as "half tragedy" and lack of social revelation of tragic life. Director Xie Fei has been teaching in Beijing Film Academy for many years. His practice of exploring Chinese film education mode and building Chinese film talent project runs through most of his life. Xie Fei's film creation and film teaching are complementary and mutually promoting exploration process. He not only devoted most of his time to teaching after middle age, but also formed his own film education ideas in many years of teaching practice. (review of contemporary film by Ni Zhen)
