Early experience
Mr. Tam was born in health village, North Point, Hong Kong. Apart from his parents, he has two older sisters and three younger sisters. He is the only boy in his family. His father, Tan JiangBai, is a football player. Influenced by his father, he has loved football since childhood. During his college years, he followed his family's advice and went to Singapore's Yi'an Polytechnic to study economics.
After finishing his junior year in college, Mr. Tam suspended his studies because of a bad illness, and then returned to Hong Kong to rest. After getting well, he didn't want to study any more, so he began to work. He found a job as a postman, carrying two bags full of letters out every day, and his salary was only HK $220. Later, because he loved singing and wanted to go to a nightclub in the evening, he quit his job as a postman and went to the store to sell stationery.
Acting experience
The loosers period
In 1968, Mr. Tam organized a band with Chen you, Peng Jianxin, ye Zhiqiang, Chen Baixiang and Chen baishen.
In 1970, the band failed to take part in the music competition. When they went out to the door, they found an application form named loosers. Then they took part in the competition with this form and won the Champion Award. So the band used the name of loosers and took part in the performance of a music program "starshow" on wireless TV.

The period of the Weiner band
In 1973, Tam Yonglin, Chen you, Peng Jianxin and ye Zhiqiang formed the Weiner band and acted as the lead singer of the band. With the help of the manager, Zhong Zhentao joined the Weiner band, known as the "five tigers of Weiner". At the end of 1973, he filmed the youth song and dance film "everybody" with the band of Weiner.
In 1974, winner signed with Polaroid (the predecessor of Polaroid) and published its first compact disc "sunshine", which became a popular song in Hong Kong. Polaroid record period
