Early experience
Wang Jiawei was born in Shanghai. His native place is Dinghai District, Zhejiang Province. When he was 5 years old, he moved to Hong Kong with his parents. His father, a sailor, left Wang Jiawei and his mother to live together after leaving for Malaysia. Although he lived in poverty, his mother took Wong Kar Wai to the cinema almost every day. From then on, he had an indissoluble bond with movies.
When Wang Jiawei was studying graphic design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic (later renamed as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University), he was once crazy about photography. After graduation, Wong Kar Wai joined TVB's production training course as a screenwriter in his spare time because he had not been engaged in his major for a long time. However, he did not stay in the pipeline like wireless station for long before he chose to leave wireless and work as a screenwriter for a living.

Screenwriting period
In 1982, he served as the screenwriter of the feature film "caiyunqu" directed by Wu Xiaoyun, which was the first screenplay written by Wang Jiawei, and thus officially entered the film circle. In 1987, he was the screenwriter of the crime drama "the final victory" directed by Tan Jiaming, which was co starred by Zeng Zhiwei, Tsui Hark and Li Lizhen. Directing period
In 1988, he directed the crime drama "Mong Kok Carmen", CO starring Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung and Jacky Cheung. This is his first film. With this film, he was nominated for best director at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards and the 25th Taiwan Film Golden Horse Awards.

In 2007, he co filmed with 34 other directors the three minute short film "one film for each" to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Cannes Film Festival. In the same year, he directed the love film "blueberry night", which is based on a short film he shot in Hong Kong in his early years. It is the first English film directed by Wong Kar Wai, starring Nora Jones, Jude Law and Natalie Portman.
