Early experience
Wang Xiaotang was born in Kaifeng, Henan Province in 1934. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, he moved to Chongqing with his parents, then returned to his hometown Nanjing and moved to Hangzhou. Influenced by his family, he learned to sing Peking Opera from a young age.
In 1948, the whole family moved to Hangzhou. He graduated from Zhejiang provincial technical secondary school the next year and continued to teach himself Peking Opera.
In 1952, he joined the Chinese people's Liberation Army in Shanghai. In the same year, he was admitted to the Peking Opera Troupe of the General Administration of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. The next year, he was transferred to the General Administration drama troupe.
Acting experience
In 1955, Wang Xiaotang was selected by Changchun Film Studio to play in his first film "mysterious travelling companion", in which he played the Yi girl Xiao Li Ying.
In 1958, Wang Xiaotang was transferred to Bayi film studio and became a professional film actor. In the same year, he won the young actor award of the 11th karowi Farley International Film Festival for his starring film "beacon in the border". In the same year, he acted in the documentary "county Party Secretary" directed by Hao Guang. In the same year, Wang Xiaotang played Alan, a KMT spy, in the red spy film Hero tiger gall. In the film, Wang Xiaotang danced a passionate rumba.
On January 1, 1959, Seahawk, starring Wang Xingang, Wang Xiaotang and Zhang Yongshou, was released, in which Wang Xiaotang played the militia company commander Wu Yufen.
In 1961, Wang Xiaotang played Lin Qiao, the elder sister of the hero Lin Dahai in Yuan Xian's plot movie "blue sky master".
In 1962, he once again cooperated with director Hao Guang to play Wu Yunhua, the fiancee of the male protagonist Wu Liji, in the plot movie Erdos storm directed by Hao Guang.
In 1963, Yan Jizhou's wild fire and spring breeze fight against the ancient city played the roles of spy Shuangshu, golden ring and silver ring in the play. Wang Xiaotang saw this novel when shooting the movie Seahawk.
In 1966, under the impact of the "Cultural Revolution", Wang Xiaotang was demobilized and worked in the forest farm for six years. In 1975, he was rehabilitated and returned to work. Since then, Wang Xiaotang has been a director. In 1977, he played Dr. Ding in the movie earthquake directed by Shi Wenzhi.
In 1982, Wang Xiaotang created a screenplay "Xiang" with the theme of overseas Chinese life, and personally acted as the director and heroine.
In 1988, he was the deputy director of Bayi film studio. In 1988, he was awarded the rank of senior colonel. Since September 1992, he has been the factory director and later the Secretary of the Party committee. He was promoted to major general in July 1993.
On December 27, 1995, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of world film and the 90th anniversary of the birth of Chinese film, Wang Xiaotang won the actress award of China Film century award.
In 2001, Wang Xiaotang wrote and directed the film "fragrant oath", which reflects the family and hometown love of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The film won the special award of the Organizing Committee of the 8th Beijing University Students Film Festival. Wang Xiaotang and Wang Chen won the best screenwriter award of the 21st China Golden Rooster Award for the film.
In 2002, Wang Xiaotang won the "Third Millennium International Award" of Italy for his contribution to Chinese films.
In 2005, he was selected as one of the 100 outstanding actors in the centennial celebration of Chinese film held by China Film Performing Arts Association.
On August 6, 2009, Wang Xiaotang won the lifelong achievement award at the 12th Golden Phoenix award ceremony of China Film Performing Arts Association held in Qingdao.
In 2012, Wang Xiaotang won the Huading award, China Film Lifetime Achievement Award.
On September 2, 2015, Wang Xiaotang visited Beijing Satellite TV's "film and television storm"; on September 19, Wang Xiaotang won the lifelong achievement Film Artist Award in the 30th China Film Golden Rooster Award held in Jilin City, Jilin Province.
In September 2020, she won the national top ten film actresses award at the New Era International Film Festival to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of new China.
Personal life
Wang Xiaotang's husband, Yan Xiaopeng, was the youngest son of Yan Jupeng, a Peking Opera student, and an actor in Bayi factory. He died of illness in 1992. In 1958, when Wang Xiaotang and his wife were more than 18 years old, they finally gave birth to their son Wang Xiaoqun.

In 1992, Wang Xiaotang attended the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
From March 1993 to March 1998, he served as a member of the all China Women's Federation of the Eighth National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference.
