Yang Qitian was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1931. Yang Qitian, who was born as a scholar's younger brother, loved drama when he was a teenager. When he was a student in Suzhou church school, he often went to Shanghai to watch dramas. Huang zuolin, Denny and other dramatists' works deeply affected him.

In 1950, he was admitted to Beijing Institute of Performing Arts (the predecessor of Beijing Film Academy). After graduating in 1953, he played the role of driver in hero driver. In 1955, he played Zhi zhenbiao in Dong Cunrui. His persistent pursuit of art and serious creative attitude made the image of Zhi zhenbiao alive on the screen. Yang Qitian won the gold medal for performance awarded by the Ministry of culture at that time. In the 1980s, he worked as a deputy director in a series of films and accumulated some creative experience. In 1983, he directed the film "Happy Zoo" independently, followed by "chivalrous women thirteen sisters". This stereo martial arts feature film once caused a sensation, and Yang Qitian also contributed to the creation of three-dimensional film art.
