Cheng Bugao

Cheng Bugao (1898-1966), a Chinese film director, was named Qidong. Zhejiang Jiaxing Pinghu people.

Cheng Bugao studied in private Yigu primary school in his early years. Later, he was admitted to Shanghai Sinian University. When he was a student in Shanghai Sinian University, he wrote film reviews for the supplement of current affairs news and translated and introduced foreign film technology knowledge. He returned to Pinghu before he graduated from Shanghai Sinian University and taught in Dengying primary school. He went to Shanghai in 1922 and began to work as a film director in 1924. He died in Hong Kong on June 20, 1966.

Life of the characters

He directed his first film "mandarin duck of water and fire" for the mainland film company. Later, he directed other companies such as Kong men Xian Fu and Fei Jian NV Xia. First, he filmed documentaries Wu Peifu and Luoyang scenery in the mainland film company, and wrote the screenplay Xiang girl. Later, he launched the great wall film company with Sun Yu and Yang Xiaozhong.

In 1928, he was transferred to star film company as director, and had a close relationship with Xia Yan, Tian Han, Yang Hansheng and Hong Shen. In the past four years, he has been involved in directing more than 20 films.

From 1928 to 1938, he directed nearly 40 films in the star film company, and contributed to the technology from wax disc dubbing to film recording. When the Anti Japanese war broke out in Songhu on January 28, he and his photographer made a sensational news documentary "the battle of Shanghai" on the front line.

In February 1933, he was elected member of China Film Culture Association. Inspired by the Soviet Union's film "the way of life" and guided by revolutionary realism, he successively directed "wild flow" (Xia Yan's screenplay, China's first progressive film against imperialism and feudalism), and "spring silkworm" (Xia Yan's adaptation of Mao Dun's novel of the same name, which is the first successful attempt of China's new literary works on the screen). After that, he was commissioned by Tian Han to edit national survival (compiled by Tian Han). The film showed the national spirit of Chinese people's unity and resistance against Japan. Soon after its release, it was banned by the authorities and Yihua film company was destroyed. Not afraid, bu Gao continued to direct progressive films such as "common hatred", "daughter's classic", "Huashan romance", "going to the northwest", "loyal soul", "old and new Shanghai" and "running at night". Among the films directed by him, "wild current" and "spring silkworm" occupy an important position in the history of Chinese film. "Wild current" is the first left-wing film of the star company, while "spring silkworm" is the first attempt to put new literary works on the screen after the May 4th movement, which has a great influence on the society.

In 1936, the Congress of Shanghai film industry was established, and he served as executive member. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, he went to Wuhan to work in the Chinese film studio under the third office of the Political Department of the Military Commission. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, he continued to work as a film director.

In 1947, he went to Hong Kong and worked in Yonghua film company and great wall film production company. By 1961, he had directed 20 films. In his later years, he wrote 150000 words of "reminiscence of the film world", leaving precious information on the history of Chinese film development.

He died in Hong Kong in June 1966.

In 1983, memories of the film world was published by China Film Publishing House. He has directed many films, such as children in troubled times, oath of the sea, people in boudoir's dream, happy enemy, girl's trouble, little bully, beauty trick, etc.
