Hong danqiang was born in 1963 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. In 1982, he was selected as an extras by Yuan Zhengjiang, director of Zhejiang provincial drama troupe. With the group rehearsed the drama "under the mountain garland" as Jin Xiaozhu.

In 1983, the TV series a dream of Red Mansions came to Hangzhou to select actors. Recommended by his teacher Tang Zhiqun, he entered the training for the crew of the TV series a dream of Red Mansions and played the role of little monk in the first two episodes. At the end of 1986, Hong danqiang got off from Beijing station with his luggage and began to drift north. He first worked as a reporter in the TV series "horse dealer camp" directed by Zhang Huanqi, and later as a deputy director in the TV series "red taxi" directed by Zhang Xiaohu. He also took part in the TV series "cocktail 888", the TV series "angry taxi" and "bloody Hilton" directed by Jin Yan.

In 1987, when he took part in the TV series "moon girl", he met his mentor Liu Yiran. Liu Yiran's appearance changed his fate. He not only recommended him to Tian Zhuangzhuang as the deputy director of the TV play "auditor's memorandum", but also actively encouraged and subsidized him to take the entrance examination and go to school.

In 1990, Hong danqiang was admitted to the TV Department of Beijing Broadcasting University (now Communication University of China), majoring in TV Editing and directing. After graduation, Liu Yiran prepared his first opportunity for him. With Liu Yiran's strong recommendation, the military department of CCTV agreed that Hong danqiang would direct the feature film "for eternal peace" to commemorate the 30th anniversary of China's military medical science.

At the beginning of 1994, it was Liu Yiran's recommendation that he had his first chance to direct a TV play independently - to shoot the TV play "we" for CCTV. At the end of the same year, he cooperated with Liu Yiran to complete the TV series "frost leaves red like February flowers", from then on, Hong danqiang really embarked on the road of directing.
