In his 70 years of artistic career, Shi Yu has always been shaping his image with the attitude of experiencing the times, life and role. His reputation as "the pioneer of experiential school" is the greatest praise to him.
Early experience
Shi Yu was born in Tianjin in 1914, formerly known as sun Jianbai. After liberation, he was director of the Art Committee and director of the Chinese Youth Art Theater. He has been interested in performing arts since he was a child. When he was a teacher, he began his early career in drama. After graduation, apply for the drama school. Later in Nanjing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming, Shanghai and other places, under the guidance of many drama predecessors, he participated in many progressive drama performances.
During the Anti Japanese War, Shi Yu refused the Japanese puppet Maintenance Association in his hometown Tianjin and asked him to participate in the work of the maintenance association. He went to Wuhan alone and returned to his alma mater, National Nanjing drama college. Then he went to Chongqing with all the teachers and students in five big wooden boats.
After taking office in Chongqing's "China Film Studio", young actor sun Jianbai (Shi Yu's original name) actively responded to the call of the Communist Party of China to "unite and face the enemy together". He joined the Anti Japanese and national salvation literature and art front led by Guo Moruo, Xia Yan and other famous patriotic cultural figures. With his talent in performing art, he publicized and educated the masses to fight against the Japanese aggressors resolutely . In the meantime, together with Tao Jin, Bai Yang, Jiang Cun and other famous actors, he participated in a number of influential dramas, such as Qu Yuan, the supremacy of the country, sunrise, the flower of Tangdi, as well as street dramas, such as put down your whip and crazy mother. The patriotic spirit of the young actors attracted the attention of Zhou Enlai, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. He invited them to visit Zeng Jiayan No.50 many times and set up a "small stove" to talk about the revolutionary principles of resisting Japan and saving the nation. One day, sun Jianbai, Bai Yang, Jiang Cun, Zhou Feng and others were lucky to meet Chairman Mao Zedong here. Chairman Mao cordially shook hands with them one by one and ate at the same table. The care of the party, the earnest instruction of vice chairman Zhou and the cruel reality have made a qualitative leap in sun Jianbai's thought. The Tianjin Wei, who grew up as a snack "Guoba dish", came from the northern Haihe River and had a stable monthly income, began to yearn for Yan'an, a revolutionary holy land with extremely difficult conditions. When he saw vice president Zhou again, he resolutely put forward his request to go to Yan'an to participate in the revolution. Zhou Enlai pondered for a moment and said earnestly, Comrade Sun, you are more needed here From then on, sun Jianbai kept in mind vice president Zhou's words and worked harder. He not only does his duty, but also unites the comrades around him. He often gives his own salary to support the performers who have no fixed income but are in financial difficulties.
After the founding of new China, the party arranged for Shi Yu (sun Jianbai has changed his name to Shi Yu) to work in Beijing. Under the leadership of Liao Chengzhi, he continued to be the first director of Chinese Youth Drama. In the following years, he successively served as director, director and vice president of the Art Committee, focusing on art research, actor training and theater management. He made positive contributions to the Renaissance of new China and was elected as a member of the fourth, fifth and Sixth National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference.
What is worth special reading is that at the first National People's Congress of the people's Republic of China held in the early days of liberation, Premier Zhou found that there was no such name as "sun Jianbai" when he examined the representatives attending the conference. He immediately asked the person in charge of the relevant authorities, "why didn't Comrade Sun Jianbai attend the conference?" When he learned that Comrade Sun Jianbai had already changed his name to Shi Yu and was ready to attend the meeting, Premier Zhou laughed happily.
Character evaluation
Once, in order to create a villain, Shi Yu made great efforts to practice his unique skill: when smoking, he didn't strike a match to light a cigarette as usual. He just threw the matchbox up with one hand, struck a match at the same time, lit a cigarette and then caught it. A little action of striking a match helps him portray this villain more vividly and more visibly.
