Huang Zongkai
James Wong Howe (August 28, 1899 - July 12, 1976), born in Yongan village, Taishan, Guangdong, China, is a Chinese American photographer and director.
In 1922, he became a photographer in the movie drum of fate. On July 24, 1926, the comic film entrapment was released as a photographer. On August 30, 1931, his comedy film "across the Atlantic" was released. On July 13, 1938, the film "soul of the Cape" was released as a photographer, and it won the best photography nomination of the 11th Academy Awards. On March 20, 1943, the war movie air force was released as a photographer and was nominated for the best Photography Award (black and white) at the 16th Academy Awards. In 1947, he was awarded the annual "medal for outstanding photography performance" by Outlook magazine. On December 12, 1955, the cameraman's love movie rose tattoo was released. On October 7, 1958, the adventure film "the old man and the sea" was released. With this film, it was nominated for the best Photography Award (color) of the 31st Academy Awards. On May 28, 1963, as a photographer, the western action film "iron man in the field" was released, and won the best Photography Award (black and white) at the 36th Academy Awards. On October 5, 1966, his hand mirror science fiction thriller "reborn" was released, with which he was nominated for the best Photography Award (black and white) of the 39th Academy Awards. In 1974, he was invited to be the photography director of the love song and dance film "wonderful lady" and was nominated for the best Photography Award at the 48th Academy Awards.
On July 12, 1976, Huang zongzhan died of illness in Hollywood. On October 17, 2003, the International Association of Cinematographers of the United States awarded "the world's 11 most influential photographers", and Huang zongzhan ranked fourth.
Early experience
Huang zongzhan was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, on August 28, 1899. His father Huang Hao worked on the Pacific Railway Construction in Washington state, and then opened a local grocery store. In 1904, five-year-old Huang zongzhan went to the United States with his father. The family first lived in Washington state and then moved to Pascoe, a small town in Southern California. When Huang zongzhan was 12 years old, he bought a Kodak "black box" home camera. Since then, photography has become his lifelong interest. However, his childhood wish was to become a professional boxer. Huang zongzhan moved to Oregon to pursue his boxing career in adolescence. Later, due to various reasons of physical and economic conditions, he gave up the idea of boxing training and went to Los Angeles to make a living. He started as an assistant to a commercial photographer, running errands and delivering goods, but he was still fired. Frustrated, he spent all his time in Chinatown. In March 1912, Huang zongzhan was introduced by a friend to clean the editing room and film library of Lasky film company at a salary of $10 a week. He saw that the company's photos were very attractive, so he saved money, bought a camera and studied photography technology. In 1916, Huang entered Hollywood as an apprentice through the introduction of his fellow countrymen. After hard work, he was promoted to assistant set photographer. Once, because the director Cecil B. demir was preparing to make a movie, and there were not enough people behind the scenes, Huang zongzhan joined his team as the "fourth photography assistant", mainly responsible for reporting and playing in front of the camera with a field record board before each shot. Because Huang zongzhan was small and always loved to carry a huge cigar in his mouth, Cecil B. demir was in a heavy and boring situation Every time I saw him appear in front of the camera, I couldn't help laughing. Since then, Huang zongzhan has officially become his regular team.
Acting experience
In 1919, Huang zongzhan began to really set foot in the film and television circle, and took part in the shooting of men and women. Later, he took part in the shooting of first love (1920), talking on a small hill (1921), ebb tide (1921) and other films. In 1922, Huang zongzhan took a modeling photo for actress Mary miles Minter, which made her light blue eyes "turn" into black eyes, and her eyes were bright and unique. Mary Myers Mingte appreciated Huang zongzhan's talent and invited him to the famous actor film company to take charge of the photography of the drama drum of fate starring her. Huang zongzhan became a photographer. on September 23, 1923, the western film "the last man" was released. On September 27, 1925, his feature film the Alaskan was released. On July 24, 1926, the comic film entrapment was released as a photographer. April 14, 1928, as a photographer's feature film "laugh, clown, laugh" released. In February 1929, Huang zongzhan returned to China to investigate the film; on April 11, he visited the Greater China Lily company, just in time for the shooting of the film "the lonely Hong after the robbery" and "the story of the chivalrous man saving the country". These sketches were later brought back to the United States by Huang zongzhan for screening, and became important materials for the American film industry to learn about China's film industry. On August 30, 1931, Huang zongzhan's comedy film trans Atlantic was released. Since then, Huang zongzhan has become one of the highest paid cinematographers in the United States. In 1947, he worked as a photographer in the black sports film the man who sold the flesh and soul. When shooting boxing scenes, he put on his pulley shoes and moved to shoot in the boxing ring. He was the first photographer to use mobile camera shooting technology. In the same year, he won the annual "medal for outstanding photography performance" issued by lookout magazine. In January 1948, Huang zongzhan bought the shooting copyright of Lao She's novel Camel Xiangzi; in February, he returned to China to investigate the film, and found actors to start shooting related materials; in November, due to China's domestic war and other reasons, the shooting plan of Camel Xiangzi was finally cancelled. On March 1, 1950, the Western love movie "the end of the treacherous man", directed by Samuel Fuller, was released. On April 18, 1951, the feature film bullfighter was released.
