Related interviews
Wu Guanying, one of the designers of the Olympic Mascot Fuwa and professor of the Academy of fine arts of Tsinghua University, the mascot image design collection activity of the 2008 Shanghai World Expo in China has opened, and has become a social hot spot in the near future and even in the future. What do Chinese cartoonists think of the mascot of the World Expo? With this question, we interviewed Wu Guanying, one of the designers of the Olympic Mascot Fuwa and a professor of the Academy of fine arts of Tsinghua University. the author: when it comes to Chinese mascots, people will think whether they will adopt the traditional Chinese color red as the main color. What color do you think the main color of the Expo will be? What is the meaning of the selected colors? Wu Guanying: the main color of the Expo should be white or blue. As for the design of mascot, the most selected one is blue. The blue Department appears in all kinds of icons, emblem and mascot design with the highest frequency. the author: the mascots we designed in the past are mainly people and small animals. Some people suggest that this mascot should break the Convention and adopt an abstract form. What is our expert's view on this? Wu Guanying: the design of mascots doesn't have to take characters or animals as the original shape. Now many mascots at home and abroad have adopted spirits as the original shape. After the personification creation, the response is very good. The main problem is whether the mascot itself can naturally interpret the theme of "Better City, better life" of the World Expo. I: what is the image of the mascot in your mind? Wu Guanying: I think the image should be concise and easy to remember, which is in line with the temperament of Shanghai as an international metropolis. At the same time, it should also facilitate the re creation of future mascot derivatives. the author: the mascot of the World Expo will also be considered to be made into an animation. As a practical problem, the final mascot must also conform to the principles of market economy, and China's animation industry has been in a low ebb. How do you view the future of mascot operation? How can we effectively promote the market-oriented role of mascots? Wu Guanying: effectively promote the marketization of mascots I think the first thing to do is to have a fascinating story. Mascots are people's response to beautiful yearning, which will not exceed people's basic expectations. Since ancient times, there have been some animals and plants that represent happiness, beauty and auspiciousness. Mascot itself is only a carrier of deductive theme. It only has visual image and relatively single spirit. It is very difficult to improve it to a height that can conform to the law of market economy and not combine it with substantial story content.
Funiu creativity
The mascots "Fuwa" and "Funiu" of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Beijing will be heard by most Guangxi citizens. But when it comes to their designer, Wu Guanying, I probably don't know much. In fact, Wu Guanying has a deep relationship with Guangxi. He was born in Nanning and moved to Wuzhou with his parents to study in Cangwu county. Even the idea of "Funiu", the mascot of the Beijing Paralympic Games, came from a trip to Guangxi. On April 10, at the invitation of Guangxi University, Wu Guanying held a lecture on mascot design for 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Before the meeting, the reporter had an exclusive interview with him and learned about the tortuous experience of "Fuwa" and "Funiu".
"Five elements" create "five children"
In the middle of 2004, the mascots of Beijing Olympic Games were collected from all over the world. At that time, Wu Guanying, who was teaching at Tsinghua Academy of fine arts, also enthusiastically participated in it. After countless ideas, the concept of "Five" gradually took shape in his mind. "Five" is an auspicious number in China, symbolizing the five blessings and abundant grain. China's "five elements" symbolize the five basic elements of "gold, wood, water, fire and earth" in nature, and also represent the long-standing culture and tradition of the Chinese nation. It happens that the five rings are the symbol of the Olympic Games, representing the five continents. In November 2004, Wu Guanying handed in her first draft. In this draft, five dolls of gold, wood, water, fire and earth were designed with the pattern of fish pattern basin with human face unearthed from Banpo. Wu Guanying named them "colorful dolls", among which the fire dolls represent the Olympic flame. On March 9, 2005, Wu Guanying received a phone call, and BOCOG invited him to participate in the modification group of mascot design. That month, Wu Guanying, Han Meilin and other six designers moved into Huairou, Beijing. It was a very tense 20 days. Not only the designer couldn't answer the phone, but even five waiters had to sign a confidentiality agreement, and even a small piece of paper couldn't be taken out. Wu Guanying knew that his design work had been eliminated because the fish pattern basin with human face was a sacrificial object, and experts thought it was unlucky. At first, they mainly modified from six directions: tiger, panda, clay figurine, rattle, monkey and dragon, but the effect was not satisfactory. only three days before the due date, Han Meilin, the team leader, decided that he, Wu Guanying and Chen Nan were responsible for revising the design of "Wuwa" according to the "five elements" plan, while others continued to revise the original six plans. In those days, we worked until 2:30 a.m. every day. The experts revised the design several times and finally used the panda representative
