In 1981, he successively published songs such as "singing in dim light", "floating cloud wanderer", "love of China", "your eyes", "Yueqin" and so on. Among them, "the love of China" was sung by Shi Xiaorong and won the Golden Tripod Award for best composition in 1981. At the end of the same year, he joined Li Shouquan, Li Jianfu, Jin Tiezhang, Xu Naisheng and Cai Qin to form the "Tianshui music collection", devoted to the creation of large-scale Chinese style songs, and released two albums of "chaila Khan" and "a thousand springs".

In 1982, he went to the United States to participate in the campus visiting group of folk songs led by Tao Xiaoqing and recorded his first album "let me meet you" at the end of the same year.

Su Lai seriously said: "I don't have a different style every time. I write what I think. At the beginning, it was a fresh trend. Later, there were more Chinese styles. Now, there are more love brothers. I have been involved in them. However, it is impossible to go back and write the previous one now. I found that before there is no dust, simple and not complex

So Sue turned to writing complex love songs. Su Lai's recent works (new album: The Madman of love) are all about love.
