Its developers are Hong Kong new world development, Cheung Kong, Henderson, Sun Hung Kai properties, Hopewell and Sun Hung Kai securities. It was opened in 1984 and is the first Sino foreign joint venture hotel in Chinese mainland. It was renovated in 1998.

It is the flagship hotel of Marriott International Group in this fast-growing metropolis.
