Peace Hotel

Heping hotel is a landmark building in Shanghai. It is located at No. 20, Nanjing East Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. It is the first modern building in the history of modern architecture in Shanghai. It has the most distinctive nine nation style suites, many distinctive restaurants, banquet halls, multi-function halls, bars, roof sightseeing gardens, etc.

Heping hotel is the first world famous hotel in China, with a turnover of 188 million yuan in 2005, a profit of 66.68 million yuan and a reception of 101468 guests.

Basic introduction

The two buildings at the entrance of Nanjing East Road in Shanghai are called peace hotel. The North Building of Peace Hotel, formerly known as Chinachem Hotel, was built in 1929. It is a Gothic building of Chicago school, with a height of 77 meters and a total of 12 floors. The hotel is located at the intersection of Nanjing East Road and Bund in Shanghai. In 1929, Victor Sasson, a Jewish businessman, conceived and founded a hotel called Cathay Hotel, which later became the peace hotel.

Designed by Chicago School Gothic architect Palmer & Turner, it featured a green copper sheathed roof 77 meters above sea level. The exterior wall is made of granite and stone. It enters from the revolving hall door. The ground of the lobby is paved with ivory Italian marble. The top of the hall is decorated with antique copper chandeliers. It is luxurious and elegant. It has the reputation of "the first floor of the Far East".

The South Building of Heping hotel was originally Huizhong hotel. The main entrance is located at No.23 East Nanjing Road, and the side door is located at No.19 near the Bund. It was built in 1908 in Renaissance style.

Construction history

Since April 1, 2007, Heping hotel has suspended its room reservation business to prepare for the complete closure and renovation in the first half of the year. As an important name card of the Bund complex and Shanghai's historical and cultural heritage, this century old hotel has become the focus of attention, and set off an unprecedented wave of nostalgia for hotel culture. After three years of large-scale renovation, the hotel's facade, marble floor, carved roof, ancient copper decorative chandeliers in the hall and other classic elements of "peace culture" have been all retained, while the service quality has been further upgraded to become a "world classic wine shop".

On July 28, 2010, after three years of renovation and at a cost of HK $500 million, the century old landmark of Shanghai beach and the peace hotel, once known as "the first building in the Far East", officially resumed business. Although the Chinese name of the renovated hotel remains "Peace Hotel", the English name is changed to "Fairmont Peace Hotel". The elegantly decorated rooms and Suites combine modern technology with the most luxurious and comfortable accommodation facilities to present you an unparalleled Hotel journey. Luxury suite or best suite can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Huangpu River and the Bund; the famous nine nation characteristic suite records the immortal legend of the old peace hotel; in addition, the presidential suite of Shaxun on the top floor was once the place where the original founder of the hotel, Victor Sasson, lived.

Jazz bar, a typical English country bar, is famous for the performance of the old jazz band. The average age of the six musicians in peace senior jazz band is over 75 years old, and they have been the reserved program of peace hotel since 1980s. The heads of state and government of Australia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, France, Greece, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Finland, Spain and other Chinese and foreign guests have all visited.

Shaxun Pavilion is the private suite of Mr. Alice Victor Shaxun, the British Jew who built the hotel. It is now the hotel's senior banquet hall.

Longfeng hall telephone booth, where the building is a dome, adopts the acoustic echo principle of ancient Chinese architecture.

Historical evolution

In 1854 (the fourth year of Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty), the South Building of peace hotel was founded, named "Central Hotel". It was the first hotel with catering industry built by Xiqiao in Shanghai.

On March 8, 1906, Huizhong Hotel, the South Building of Peace Hotel, was rebuilt with the earliest sanitary equipment and two elevators in Shanghai, as well as the earliest roof garden in Shanghai.

In 1909, China, Britain, the United States, France and other countries held a universal anti smoking meeting in Huizhong hall.

In 1911, Sun Yat Sen went to Nanjing to take office as the provisional president of the Republic of China. He passed through Shanghai to attend the welcome meeting held by all walks of life in Huizhong hall. He put forward the famous slogan "revolution has not yet been successful, comrades still need to work hard".

In 1926, the North Building of the Peace Hotel began construction.

In 1927, Chiang Kai Shek and Song Meiling held an engagement ceremony in Huizhong hall.

On September 5, 1929, the North Building of peace hotel was completed and opened. The cost of the building exceeded 2.48 million taels of silver. It has the reputation of "the first building in the Far East".

In August 1933, Lu Xun, a Chinese writer, walked up the stairs from here to meet with Sir Ma Lan of England.

In March 1936, American comedian Charlie Chaplin and modern times heroine Pauline gaudy stayed in room 51 (now room 568).

One of the most famous plays of British playwright Noel Coward, private life, was written in room 314.

Jiuxiao hall is a high-class banquet hall of the hotel. The door is decorated with top-grade lalik art glass. The balcony in the restaurant is the best place to view the Bund, Huangpu River and Pudong. It has received many heads of state and government at home and abroad.

In 1956, the Soviet naval fleet visited China and entered the peace hotel from the east gate.

The Indian naval fleet in 1957 and US President Clinton in 1998 also entered from the east gate.

In 1960, field marshal Bernard Montgomery of the United Kingdom visited China and stayed in room 72 (now room 778) when passing by Shanghai. During his stay in China, Chairman Mao Zedong met with him.

In October 1963, former Japanese Prime Minister zhanzo Ishihashi stayed in room 62 (now room 678)

In January 1964, Premier Zhou Enlai met with French Prime Minister Edgar fur in jiuxiao hall. A few days later, China and France announced the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In 1971, the American table tennis delegation was invited to visit China. During their stay in Shanghai, they stayed in the peace hotel and held a grand welcome banquet in the peace hall.

Muhammad Ali, the world champion of the United States, traveled to Shanghai with his wife in May 1994 and lived in room 643.

On June 30, 1998, Shanghai mayor Xu Kuangdi and his wife hosted a banquet for US President Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton at jiuxiao hall.

In October 1998, Wang Daohan, President of the Association for cross strait relations, and Gu Zhenfu, chairman of the Taiwan Strait Exchange Foundation, held "Wang Gu talks" in the peace hall.
