Chenghai is located in the Hanjiang Delta Plain of eastern Guangdong Province. The terrain is mainly plain. The style of writing has been very prosperous since ancient times. The lantern riddle activities originated from ancient argot and clever fighting have a long history in the area. It developed into a local custom culture with local characteristics in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Chenghai lantern riddle retains the traditional form of "drum shooting" in Lin'an of Song Dynasty, which is unique. In addition, there are folk custom forms such as "sending riddle mark" and "guessing riddle mother". There are more than 20 kinds of creation methods and hundreds of riddles.

Nowadays, Chenghai lantern riddle has become an indispensable cultural project in local holiday entertainment and special publicity activities, and has become a cultural link linking the friendship of hometown at home and abroad. In 1999, Chenghai was named "the hometown of folk lantern riddle art" in Guangdong Province, and in May 2000, it was named "the hometown of Chinese folk lantern riddle art" by the Ministry of culture.

Due to the constraints of economy and other factors, the development of Chenghai lantern riddle is not balanced, and the level of riddle art needs to be further improved. It is necessary to strengthen the protection and support to make this traditional folk riddle flower bloom forever.
