Dehong Water Splashing Festival is a grand traditional festival of Dai, De'ang and Achang people living in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in western Yunnan Province. The festival lasts from the seventh day to the tenth day after Qingming Festival.
Water splashing Festival has a history of nearly a thousand years. It is formed on the basis of Dai rice culture and the integration of Theravada Buddhism from the 11th to 13th century. It is the product of the combination of the religious ceremony of the Southern Buddhism and the traditional etiquette of the Dai people in Dehong. It presents the remarkable characteristics of the traditional Dai culture. The activities of the water splashing Festival are colorful, with rich humanistic connotation and broad mass base. The main activities include people's flower picking, believers' Buddha worship, Dragon Pavilion worship, Buddha Bathing ceremony, watering blessing, song and dance activities, martial arts performance, men's and women's bag throwing (throwing Hydrangea ball) and setting off Kongming lamp, floating water lamp, high rising and so on.
