Brief introduction to Nanxi Haozi

Nanxi chant is popular in Qianjiang District of Chongqing city. Its embryonic form is Tujia farmers' labor chant and folk song chant, which is similar to the drum and Gong for weeding. In the process of long-term singing, Nanxi chant has gradually developed into a special kind of folk song. It is different from Chuanjiang chant and Zhufu chant around it, as well as other labor chants and folk songs widely sung in Wuling mountain area.

Nanxi Haozi lyrics are mostly improvised, but its tune and singing method are relatively fixed. There are more than ten kinds of singing styles, such as Daban tune, Jiudaoguai tune, santaisheng tune, dadaotai tune, Nanhe tune and trumpet tune. The basic singing method is that one person shouts, two or three people play the role of high pitched voice, three or more people shout the low pitched voice, and all people help each other, thus forming the natural sound of high, middle and low voices echoing with each other and surging in the mountains and fields.

The content of Nanxi Haozi involves the history, geography and folklore of Tujia nationality, and conveys a lot of ancient historical and cultural information. It is the remains of Tujia music culture, which has high artistic value. At the same time, it can enrich people's cultural life and serve the spiritual civilization construction of contemporary society.

At present, less than ten people in Qianjiang district can sing Nanxi chants, and they are all old. No one among the young and middle-aged can sing chants. This folk music style is in serious danger and needs to be rescued and protected.
