The legend of Dong Yong

The legend of Dong Yong has a long history and is one of the most popular legends in contemporary China. It has also been widely inherited in Danyang City, Jiangsu Province. It is said that Dong Yong was born in Yanling, Danyang. His family was poor and he was filial to his relatives. Because his father died and was buried without a coffin, he sold himself as a slave. His filial piety moved the seven fairies, the youngest daughter of the Jade Emperor. So the seven fairies went down to earth and married Dong Yong under the tree. Men plowed and women weaved. They respected and loved each other and paid off their debts together. Unexpectedly, when the Jade Emperor learned that the seven fairies had come down to earth, he sent heavenly soldiers and generals to take them back to heaven. From then on, the couple was separated. Later, the seven fairies gave birth in the sky and delivered them to the world. Dong Yong raised them. Looking forward to his mother's heart, he knelt down at wangxianqiao to look forward to his mother. After kneeling for 7749 days, he finally met his mother and son. Wangxian bridge left a pair of deep small knee prints.
According to records in Zhenjiang annals by Yuan Zhishun, Dong Yong's tomb in Han Dynasty is located in Yanling, Danyang. There is a stele recording his event. It is named Dong Bei, also known as Dong Fen. "Dong Yongzi was born in Danyang, Runzhou (now Zhenjiang City)," it was recorded in the song edition of brocade by Gu jueyu, Jiajing of Ming Dynasty "Huaiyin Ji", a Qingyang opera libretto in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty, states: "Dong Yong was originally from Danyang county." According to the records of Danyang County by Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, wangxianqiao in the south of Yanling in Danyang (after the zoning adjustment in 1958, wangxianqiao was zoned to Jintan City, close to Yanling in Danyang) and the tomb of Dong Yong. In the Han Dynasty, Dong Yong's servant tried to support his relatives. When he died, he borrowed 10000 yuan from his master to bury him. He met a woman and asked to be his wife. He and his wife weaved 300 pieces to compensate the master. In January. Ci Yong said: "I Zhinu, Yuan Jun to filial piety, the emperor to help you pay." Words whirl in the air. Later generations named the place "dongpi" and the bridge "Wangxian". Before the "Cultural Revolution", Dong Yong's tomb was in donggezhuang of Yanling in Danyang, and Dong Yong's temple was in Dongjia of erling in Danyang. It was destroyed in the cultural revolution.
Huangmei Opera Tianxianpei, based on zhijinji and huaiyinji, has been sung all over the country. The lyrics of Dong Mingyong, who lives in Danyang, are well known to all women and children. Local opera, TV series and other forms of literature and art play the legend of Dong Yong, making the legend of Dong Yong gain new vitality.
