TCM diagnosis is an integral part of TCM. Guided by the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, TCM diagnosis mainly uses the method of "four diagnosis" to diagnose diseases, explore the cause, location, nature and situation of diseases, identify syndromes, diagnose diseases and provide basis for treatment. In the long-term medical practice, traditional Chinese medicine has formed a complete set of theories, methods, techniques and objects for the diagnosis of diseases, reflecting the distinctive Chinese traditional culture and regional characteristics.
TCM diagnosis has a long history. Bian que, a famous doctor of Qin and Yue in the Warring States period, was good at "pulse cutting, color watching, sound listening, shape writing, and talking about the disease". According to the theory of Yin Yang and five elements, visceral image and meridians, Huangdi Neijing describes many diagnostic methods in detail, and expounds the principles of their comprehensive application, which lays the foundation of "four diagnostic methods". In the Western Jin Dynasty, Wang Shuhe compiled the pulse meridian, connecting the past and the future, and established the pulse diagnosis method of traditional Chinese medicine. In clinical practice, doctors of all dynasties continuously inherited and improved the diagnosis method of traditional Chinese medicine, and formed a large number of ancient books about the diagnosis method, such as the theory of three causes and one disease syndrome in Song Dynasty, Ao's golden mirror record of typhoid fever in Ming Dynasty, and wangshenzunjing in Qing Dynasty.
Inspection is a diagnostic method for doctors to observe the relevant parts of the patient's body and their secretion and excreta by using vision to understand the condition. It includes looking at the tongue, looking at the spirit, looking at the color, looking at the five features, looking at the shape, looking at the collaterals and so on. Among them, tongue inspection refers to observing the changes of tongue quality and tongue coating, so as to determine the condition and predict the prognosis.
Smelling diagnosis is a diagnostic method for doctors to understand the disease by listening to the patient's voice and smelling the patient's smell. Listening to the voice refers to understanding the voice changes of the patient's language, breathing, cough, vomiting, hiccup and so on through the voice; smelling the odor refers to smelling the abnormal odor of the patient's breath, body gas, excreta and so on.
Interrogation is a systematic and targeted inquiry made by doctors to patients or attendants. It is a diagnostic method to fully understand the disease.
Palpation is a kind of diagnostic method that doctors use the touch of hand to touch, press and experience the Cunkou pulse and specific parts of the body surface, so as to understand the disease. It mainly includes two parts: cutting Cunkou pulse and pressing diagnosis. Cunkou is the intersection of Qi and blood in the viscera of the human body. The method of taking Cunkou alone has been formed in the book 81 difficult classics written in the Han Dynasty.
Diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine is a unique method of diagnosing diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. With the development of medical science and the extensive exchange of Chinese and foreign cultures, its potential scientific and cultural connotation plays an increasingly important role. However, due to the influence of Western medicine, the application of TCM diagnosis is shrinking.
