Brief introduction of ceramic firing techniques in Zibo
Applicant: Zibo City, Shandong Province
Zibo City is one of the birthplaces of Chinese ceramics, is the country named "Chinese Ceramic City". According to archaeological findings, Yiyuan cave in Zibo is a site of early Neolithic human habitation and pottery making. More than 8500 years ago, the ancient pottery kiln in the period of post Li culture is the earliest one discovered in China so far. There are also more than ten ancient kiln sites, such as Zhaili kiln in the Northern Dynasty, cicun kiln and Boshan kiln in the Tang and Song dynasties.
Zibo Ceramics has made full use of local ceramic resources, created colorful ceramic culture, and formed a rough, bold, simple and lively style in the production process. Zibo Ceramics have a wide range of subjects, from daily necessities to furnishings, and then to the porcelain for garden construction, which reflects the social, economic, cultural background and appearance of the central Shandong at that time.
With the development of modern industry, the traditional firing techniques of Zibo Ceramics are also facing the impact of mechanization and high technology. In the 1980s, with the gradual withdrawal of the round kiln (commonly known as "Mantou kiln") which has lasted for one hundred years of Zibo Ceramics, the traditional ceramic firing technology is also facing the situation that the old artists have retired and died one after another, and the hand-made technology is on the verge of being lost, which is in urgent need of comprehensive protection and inheritance.
