Nantong city is located in the east of Jiangsu Province and the North Bank of the Yangtze River Estuary. It is surrounded by water on three sides. The climate is mild, and the air volume, wind speed and wind force are relatively uniform. It is very suitable for the larger board harrier kites to fly. Plate kite is named because it is shaped like a flat plate. Its production is concentrated in zhadong Township, Zhaxi Township, qinzao Township in the suburbs of Nantong City and Ligang Township, Liuqiao Town, Si'an town in Tongzhou city.

Nantong Banyao kite, also known as "sengkou Banyao", originated in the Northern Song Dynasty. It integrates mounting modeling, color matching painting, temperament design, and whistle carving. Its shapes include square, rectangle, hexagon, and octagon. Most of them are hexagonal harriers (that is, kites with six convex corners composed of a rectangle and a square), and some of them are seven linked stars, nine linked stars, and nineteen linked stars "Star" and so on. The big one is more than Zhang, and the small one is full of feet. The decorative patterns are mostly meticulous and heavy color, including "Eight Immortals", "phoenix play peony" and "Three Kingdoms story". They like to use red, black, green and purple to create a strong color contrast. Kites are decorated with whistles of different sizes, many of which are thousands. "Sentry" is composed of two parts: sentry and whistle. The surface of a whistle is usually carved with bamboo pieces or crisp wood blocks; the whistle tube is divided into two categories, i.e. tubular whistle and spherical whistle, and the tubular whistle is generally called "whistle" in ancient times; the spherical whistle is generally called "mouth", which is usually made of gourd, shell and cocoon. No matter how big or small the standard sentry board is, it can withstand the wind force above level 5. Even in the strong wind of level 7-8, it can still hang hundreds of meters high and make a wonderful sound.

The basic feature of Nantong Banyao kite lies in the "whistle" design. The differences in the size, shape and material of the whistle make the volume, sound quality and tone varied. Nantong has more than 20000 kite lovers and more than 1000 artists (including more than 50 sculptors). The main inheritors are Wang Zejun, Huang Zhiling, Wang Deqing, Gu Jirong, Gao Huanwen, Gao Yuwen, Zhou Guangquan, Guo Chengyi, Gao Zexian, Gao Zecai, Lu Guilin, Lu Baoru, etc. In recent years, Ligang township has been named as the national kite town by the Ministry of culture. However, the surviving masters of "whistle" carving are all over 50 years old, and some painters are over 60 years old. There are fewer and fewer people who can paint and carve. Moreover, the small kite exhibition hall and Kite Association are all non-governmental organizations and are in a state of self-reliance.
