Introduction to Yongchun paper painting:
Applicant: Yongchun County, Fujian Province
Paper painting is a unique traditional folk art in Yongchun County, Fujian Province. "Weaving and painting" is a specialty of Yongchun. In this way, fine paper is used for writing or painting, which is cut into long thin strands, and pure white strands are used for longitude and latitude, and then colored. It's similar to the so-called painting in ancient times (Volume 11 of Yongchun Prefecture annals)
Yongchun paper painting is said to have originated in the late Sui and early Tang Dynasties. In the prosperous Tang Dynasty, there were many local paper painting workshops, and many poets wrote poems praising Yongchun paper painting. In Song Dynasty, the output of paper-based paintings increased, which not only met the local consumer demand, but also exported to various ports in Nanyang and became treasures of wealthy families. Yongchun's Paper paintings in Ming Dynasty have become gifts to the court and treasures collected by dignitaries. "During Jiajing period, there was no Yan Song's family belongings, but paper-based calligraphy and painting." The Qing Dynasty's "yongchunzhou weaving and painting in the middle of Fujian Province, with rib pattern paper cutting as a piece, five colors alternating, longitude and latitude into patterns, all landscapes, figures, flowers and birds" (Menglan Suo pen by Yang Fuji). According to historical records, Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong loved Paper paintings very much. Up to now, the Palace Museum still has the paper painting twelve screens made by Emperor Gaozong of Qing Dynasty.
The paper weaving painting can only be completed through four main processes: painting, cutting, weaving and mounting. In the process of production, the finished Chinese paintings are mounted on a bracket, cut into 1-2 mm wide strips of paper with a knife as the warp line, and white paper of the same specification is used as the weft line. The picture is re woven by hand. Finally, the mounting and color supplement are completed. There are a wide range of themes in paper-based paintings, including landscapes, flowers and birds, birds and animals, historical figures, fairy tales, folklore and so on. Common forms include nave, hanging screen, couplet and so on. There are only four specifications, which can be customized for special needs. Yongchun's paper-based paintings, which are vertical and horizontal in longitude and latitude, are valued by the masses and dignitaries in the past dynasties. People always like to use paper-based paintings as works of art, or hanging in the lively hall, or embellishing in the quiet study, or as precious gifts to relatives and friends.
In modern times, due to the lack of sales of paper-based paintings, some artists were forced to change their careers because they could not make a living. If it is not protected in time, Yongchun's paper weaving paintings will probably die out completely.
