A brief introduction to the technique of making national musical instruments (the technique of making elephant foot drum of Dai nationality)
Applicant: Linxiang District, Lincang City, Yunnan Province
The Dai People's elephant foot drum making skills are mainly spread in Qinghua village, mangling village, mengwang village, mengzhun village, Houzhai village, manggong village and other villages in nine towns (sub district offices) of Linxiang District, Lincang City. The history of making elephant foot drum is about 500 years. There are nearly 20 folk artists who are good at making elephant foot drum, including Feng CHUANSHI from Qinghua village of mangpan sub district office.
The Dai People's technique of making elephant foot drum embodies the totem worship in the early days of its invention. The white elephant is the mascot of the Dai nationality. The drum that conveys the auspicious sound is made into elephant foot drum with the shape of white elephant legs, which is an important material evidence of the Dai nationality's pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty, and the harmonious development of man and nature. The Dai people in Linxiang district can't do without the elephant foot drum in the water splashing Festival, the gate closing Festival (Qiandeng Festival), the door opening Festival, the flag pole Festival and other folk activities.
Elephant foot drum is sacred. Its wide application in Dai areas has become an important carrier for the inheritance and development of Dai culture.
Xiangjiaogu production technology contains profound and extensive content of Dai culture, and its technology is closely related to Dai people in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and other countries. It has direct origin with the Dai history and culture in Xishuangbanna and Dehong. The xiangjiaogu of the Dai nationality in Linxiang district has distinctive characteristics: highlighting small and medium-sized, paying attention to the light type, and embodying the regional practical type. The technique of making elephant foot drum of the Dai nationality in Linxiang district is a valuable cultural treasure. It has been developed with its tenacious artistic vitality and has a great influence on the Dai nationality in the border area between China and Myanmar.
