Introduction to woodcarving (flower and Rose Art)
Applicant: Chengmai County, Hainan Province
Huagui art is the folk name of Hainan for woodcarving statues, idols and figures. In Hainan, the flower art of Chengmai County is the most representative.
Huagui art has a long history. Its origin is related to the prosperity of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in Song Dynasty. In the past, all kinds of statues of Buddhists, Taoists and Confucians were made by Huagui artists. In the Song Dynasty, the early Taoist temples in BAISHILING, Chengmai County, offered sacrifices to the king of heaven and the God of thunder. It is said that the first carved statues appeared. In the Ming Dynasty, Junpo Festival, also known as Yougong Festival, began to rise in Chengmai County. People carried out processions of various folk protective gods for people to worship. In the Qing Dynasty, the activities of Buddhism and Taoism were more prosperous, and all kinds of temples were all over the urban and rural areas. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, almost every month has "zuozhai" (temple fair activities). There are many gods to offer sacrifices to, which is the most prosperous period of Huagui art. After the Republic of China, temple fairs were popular and declined, which also had a certain impact on the development of Huagui art.
The art of flowers and roses is mostly made of sunk wood, tree roots and wood fossils. The sculpture of gods, wooden idols, figures, natural objects, abstract images and decorative images carries a lot of information about history, religion and folk beliefs, and has rich cultural connotation and artistic appreciation value. It plays an indispensable social role in the local worship, puppet entertainment, home decoration and beautification of the environment. Due to the impact of modern art, the traditional rose art is in an endangered state, which should be paid attention to.
